Redhat is crawling !

Post by Bandit »

hello,

I have been running redhat 7.2 for about a month. The problem is that the OS feels VERY SLOW. I am running Windowmaker. For example it takes like 5 seconds just to open Konqueror to browse around. It takes much longer to open any real application like Netscape or OpenOffice (like 15-20 seconds). I am no linux expert but I always thought Linux was ideal for slow systems? It turns out that WindowsXP blows away RH7.2 in terms of speed right now on my machine.

Is there a way to fix this? I am not running any special featires like fading or any of that non-sense. I have 256MB RAM and CeleronII 600.

Thanks

No I was initially using KDE. Someone recommended I should try blackbox or windowmaker. I did and it hasnt made any difference so far. Both desktops crawl. Its like I am running out of RAM or something, or the HD too slow.

hrm.. i'd recommend running some sort of memory test, and running some sort of hdd surface scan..possibly either one goin bad...could be wrong, just my past experience is all. nix always ran fine for me..

No, the problem is that RedHat sucks :D

I been running Debian and OpenBSD on an Athlon 550MHz with 288MB of RAM for a while and I use it for desktop use, compiling software and general network hacking with no speed problems.

As a matter of fact, I often wonder why a person would need a GHz CPU anyway, the bus speed is still on the MHz range anyway? Be better off purchasing an old SMP system!!

It's all about op-system overhead. SOme have more, some have less. RedHat for exapmple, has more :D

It's also related to the amount of beta quality software that distro's like RedHat or even Mandrake release. They always package the newest software but never filter out the bugs before doing so.

It all follows their commercial backing, the Microsoft thinking that sell more makes more. Newer features = more sales, poor software = frequent updates, etc...

I guess I will have to try Debian, though I've heard is more difficult to use? I'm pretty dissapointed so far.

Debian is easy to use, it's just hard to install. The installation is text based and very sysadmin'ish.

Wait a bit untill Debian releases PGI into stable. Mandrake will be doomed :D
