Is this a new router out of the box? If so, like the others days, it's on a 192.168.1.XXX scheme out of the box, itself taking the usual .1 for gateways. Where did your 213.123.2.1 come from?
Ensure the TCP/IP on your computers are "obtain auto", or manually set to 192.168.1.XXX with XXX being a unique number on each computer from 2 - 253. If set to "obtain auto", go to your start button, start==>run==>winipcfg if on Win9X, and if on WinNT (which includes 2K and XP), at the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all you should see your computers getting a 192.168.1.10X address on the network card. If it's different, now you know why.
You're able to ping the router?
Yes any funky software from other routers should be uninstalled.
IE set to use LAN, not proxy detect?

ya my dad returned that router. we are going to get a new one.
but i dont think its the router that has the defect.
and you said "you should see your computers getting a 192.168.1.10X "
for the ip? no for the ip im gettin a 24.something.something. and the gateway is similar but not the same (dont know what gateway is though hehe)
thnx

So the NIC card on one of your computers is getting a 24.x.x.x number? That is a public IP (sounds like RR or some other cable service). That means you had the modem connected directly to your computer which means you were not connected through the router.
When I bought my Linksys router, I patched my computers into the router(while they were on), and patched the DSL modem in and the router immediately assigned my computers a 192.168.1.1XX address. This is before any router configuration.
I really don't see why this wasn't the case for you. Are you sure this was a router and not just a Linksys hub/switch? That would explain your computers each getting a public IP address.

well anyways maybe it was a switch. i have really no idea wats the diff between a router and a switch. but my dads gonna buy a router tonite or somtin like that. den ill see if the same problem arises.
kinda out of the question but why do you need a router to share a broadband internet connection? cant you just network your computers? because i saw this thing thats like 30-40 bux, a networkin kit and it says you cant share internet. thats like 100 bux cheaper then a router
thnx

If you want to share the internet without paying for extra IP addresses, get a router. The Linksys router is model # BEFSR41. It is a 4 port router, so this will work for you unless you are planning to add more computers. In this case, I would recommend buying the BEFSR81 which has 8 10/100 switched ports.
You can share the internet with just a switch, but you will end up paying for extra IPs through your cable provider. In your case, you would have to pay for 2 additional addresses since you have 3 computers. Your best bet is to buy a router.
