New tweaker on board- I need to tweak.

Post by Keytone »

I just built a new computer. P4, 512 meg ram, Linksys cable router, nvidia gforce mx 420, audigy platinum, etc...
I need to tweak. Is it cool to use the home speed patch, then follow with the sguide tweak, then the web tweak? Any other tweak patches I can utilize?
Any help ised.
Thanks, Keytone

OOOhhh, I see you have OOL, your gonna put us to shame with your speed - hehehehehe. Download Cablenut and make sure you have the latest firmware for your router, also what OS are you using? Post back with your OS and Lobo or myself or some one will give you some suggestions tomorrow - getting late tonight. :D :)

Thanks for the reply mnosteele52

OOPs! forgot some specifics - OS w2k, SURFboard cable modem. 1.9 Gig, Sohoware 10/100 pci ethernet card, Maxtor 60gig HD, P4T-E Intel 850/478 MB, Cendyne DVD and CD-RW.

OK. Downlaoded Cablenut. I also downloaded the latest firmware for the surfboard. It indicated that it was successful upgrade. It took a couple of trys to get it to be successful though. Something about communicating with the server?

I will not perform anything until I hear back.

Bring up Cablenuts adjuster inside Cablenut on desktop the numbers below go in 3 places in W2k and XP, they are: TcpWindowSize, Default Recieve Window, Global Max TcpWindowSize: take out number that is in there and put in one of these, 1 at a time, try:554800, 578160, 601520, 642400, 730000, 747520

You do not have to show me but check analyzer at Test Tweak Here, below in sig, to make sure RWIN is in, you will see number right after (RWIN) on analyzer

At bottom click save to registry, and REBOOT each time you change value in adjuster or it will not work. Click on tools at top of IE, internet options, delete files and offline files (This is safe, temp files) and click on clear history after EVERY test . Quick speed test : choose location closest to you: http://www.speakeasy.net/main.php?page=sup_pops
Speedtest may open another browser, so check taskbar and close other, no other programs should be running, No AIM, ICQ, Virus scanner, Firewall, nothing
1.) Make sure defrag has been run, defragmented files slow you down.
2. At top of IE, click on Tools, internet options, click on delete files and click on offline files (It's safe), click on clear history, yes
3.) Go to Start button, programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup, Click OK (Safe)
4.) Run scandisk (Short version)
5.) Scandisk on XP?
Click on My Computer, select Drive that XP is on, RIGHT click on BLANK place, select properties, then tools at top tab, click check now, check box automattically fix system errors, click start.

Once you find fast number for you, you want to save it, on file at top of adjuster click on that, save custom settings, put RWIN size in as name and click on save, now if you ever want these settins back, click on file, open custom settings file, and click on RWIN number, then click on save to registry at bottom, and REBOOT, your done.
Blank boxes in adjuster just mean default values are being used.

SAVE SETTING's so we do not have to do this again, directions above, good luck.

If you are not from USA go to http://www.testmyspeed.com and select test site close to you

Speedguides or Chestnuts?

Post by Keytone »

Lobo - Thanks for the instructions. I am wondering which tweak programs to use? Speedguides or Chestnuts?

I have downloaded the following from the SG site:
home speed patch, the sguide tweak, and the web tweak.

Now, which do I go with? The ones above or the Cablenut?

Thanks, Keytone

 but

OK. Here's the TCP/IP results: Recommendations anyone?
FRom what I here, w2k is optimzed for cable. True or not?
Thanks.

TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 49 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Yes test looks good but try these numbers:

Try Tcp Recieve Window of 51100, 64240 Tcp1323Opts scaling is not checked for those numbers but is for these, don't forget:

554800, 578160, 601520, 642400, 730000, 747520

Well, here's another one. I tried all the rwin values. I didn't see much difference. But now I seem to have a problem with incomplete web pages?!!! x-outs instead of full pages being displayed. What's up with that?

SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer

In IE under Tools at top down to internet options, advanced tab at top, down to restore defaults, click that, Click OK and reboot, if that does not do it try:

To repair IE
Go to contol panel,add/remove programs
Select IE and internet tools from box
Click remove
A box will come up asking if you want to repair or remove IE
Click on repair

Or you may have to redownload IE:

To redownload IE
Go to http://www.microsoft.com
Under downloads click on download center
Select which which version you want and select your OS
Click on run from this location when download box comes up
good luck

You cannot repair IE unless you have downloaded it before

Ken, it's IE 6.0. w2K. I cannot figure out why I still get x-outs. I actually went to MS webssite and downloaded SP2. That seemed to make things worse. Then I re-laoded w2k. I called my local cable company as well. They were helpful but still things remained the same. This morning I received update notification from the MS windows update page. I went there and downloaded 5.5 update, then the 6.0 update, re-booting each time. Still there are x-outs. Text is OK, justthe graphics are a problem. There has to be some type of memory allocation problem, I guess? Well, thanks anyway.

The other strange thing is that if I go back then forward witht web page I was at, then the graphics seem to appear. Very strange.
