i have always gone about a reformat in the way Yard just said. back up all your data and .zip/.ace/.rar files (programs/executables usually dont like to be moved without a reinstall due to their needed registry links) to whatever/wherever you can, and completely rewrite your drive from the partitions up. if its a SCSi drive i will low-level format from the controller as well (wouldnt bother if its an IDE drive).
by doing this you wipe out any junk thats not important as well as any unidentified virii/trojans/worms and whatnot that may be present. defining new partitions (even if the same size) also keeps the partition info new and less likely to corrupt on you. gives a person a bit more peace-of-mind.
then again, if you dont have the means to back up your desired files, the as was said before, you are "oh-tay".
