I just got hooked up with mediacom@Home and I remember
seeing somewhere that it was not a good idea to use their propriatary software/browser. If so, why? And how do I set
up a stand alone news reader like Agent when the only listing
for their news server that I can find is "news". TIA
New @Home user...Is it a bad idea to use their software?

to set up your news groups you need to use netscape or outlookexpress
and "news" without the quotes is all you need to enter in for the mail server name
just like "mail" is all you need for email
but you could put news.subdomain...................with your subdomain being specific to your area
so if you were in Mobile Ala. your fully qualified mail or news servre would be something like news.mobl1.al.home.com
but i cant remember all the subdomains off the top of my head, but you could get it from support.........anything else please ask

As for mail, use netmail.home.com...works better than just 'mail' IMO...

I agree, don't use the @home software.
I have Mediacom@home in Harvest, AL and it is not necessay to install their software.
All you need to know is:
Your computer name: ( They assign that)
Workgroup: @home
Email server name
News server name
I am at work right now so I can't rember the email server name and the news server name is not "news" most of the time.
Tech support can provide that to you.
I signed up with Mediacom last year in October. A week later I found out ISP Channel was history. It took over six months for them to change me over to @home.
I got up one morning in June 2001 and could not connect to the net. I tried seveal times that morning and still no luck. A call to tech support was greeted by "Oh, Mr. Biddle you have been changed over to you new @home service and the connection will be complete in about 24 hours."
I asked " That's it?"
She told me the connection would just start working when it was all complete.
Three days later I called again.
Technical problems but they are getting close.
Two more days.... the guy says it is working. I tell him no it's not.
He says ok go to Network Neighborhood and tell me what it says on Identification.
I told him, he asks me to hold a minute. Then he tells me that is not correct. I tell him that is what the tech put in the computer in October 2000. He tells me that his records show someone should have called me and told me what my new computer name and workgroup was. I told him that no one had called me, he apoligized and gave it to me. I asked before we ended the conversation what the news server name was and he told me "news".
I asked hime to hold on and let me try that. I opened Outlook Express and set it up and got nothing. He asked me to hold.... came back and said he was wrong it was news.toney1.al. whatever... I entered that and it worked.
All in all the service has been good and the speed are good. Hope you get it all set up and enjoy your connection.

Also, if you are using winXP, there is a known issue with the @Home software installer freezing the system up once you put the disk in the drive and it autoplays...

Mmmmm hmmmmm.......
Yup - proprietary software sucks. It's only advantage is if you want their advertising splashed all over your screen. And who's to say what kind of information about your system it isn't grabbing? ;>)
