IP Changes too Often
IP Changes too Often
OK, I had a problem with Adelphia here in Scranton, PA where my cable modem (RCA DCM235) would reboot on it's own. Cable company checked the line and replaced the modem today with a SurfBoard 4100 (at my request).
I am using a Sohoware 4-port Cable/DSL router on three machines and Windoze 98 on all three.
The new modem works fine, except that I noticed that my Internet IP is changing too often (the modem isn't rebooting, just my IP changes). And it's pissing me off because I have to re-boot the router in order for it to pick up the new IP. This happens at any given time, without warning, and LONG before the lease expires.
I called Adelphia and told them that this was happening and they basically blew me off, saying that they don't assign static IPs and they won't support routers. They said to disconnect the router and Windows will seamlessly renew the IP automatically without interruption.
Now I'm suck conencting the cable modem directly to the computer I am using. If I use my router, I have to reboot it when I lose my connection. This sux.
Any recourse?
Thanks,
-Tom in Scranton, PA.

DCHP
Sorry hit wrong button and started a new thread but:
Ok, this is why cable is called a DCHP service. It can change as many times as the certain router you are on decides to release. They release it to "Free up IPS and Lag". You IP will change as many times as the ISP see's fit. Once a month maybe 3 times a week. Its all up to them

You will have this proublem most cable service run obtain Ip automaticaly. You may have to set your router up for dhcp server. They can not run on static Ip's. Just as was all ready mention. It is annoy. But is set up that way for security reason. So no one can still someone eles Ip.
:nod:Have A Nice Day!!!!!!!!!
Your router should be able to pick up the new leased IP address seamlessly, I know my NetGear RT314 router does. You shouldn't assign static IP's on your WAN port regardless of how long the lease may last, particularly for the problem you're having. What router are you using?

I'm using a SohoWare NBG800 BroadGuard 4-port switching router.
I tried this...
I cloned my main computer's NIC card MAC address to the router. I assigned static IPs (192.168.1.XXX) to each of my 3 computers. I also used the router's IP as the gateway (192.168.1.1) and my cable company's DNS servers. This is all in the TCP/IP settings for my NIC cards.
So far, so good.
I called the Sohoware tech support people, and they said that if my cable company changes IPs on me, the router has to be rebooted (either physically or via web page reset).

Ahh.. That sucks. I have yet to see if my NetGear RT314 router needs a reboot after it's WAN IP lease expires, but I'm pretty certain no action will be needed. It does have the option of whether I want it configured to get an IP dynamically, or if I need to use PPPoE login to get an IP. Your router was probably not designed to support that function.

Good choice!
I'd go for the NetGear RT314, check out the specs here.
