does RWIN matter with DSL??
does RWIN matter with DSL??
Hello, I am still at it with tweaking my DSL, but it keeps giving me a message when i do my tweak test, to put my RWIN to certain numbers... Does the number I have in RWIN matter for tweaking DSL modems, or only cable? Please help - I called my ISP [bellsouth] and they said they dont guarantee speed, so I guess i'm on my own.

ok..??
thats what it told me. I used the 2nd or 3rd one it told me though, so maybe ill try 64240 [the 1st one] this time and reboot. but my MAIN question is... theres a bunch of .ccs files on the cablenut adjuster program i use, and am i supposed to open each one [there's pppoe_enternet100-300_2k, pppoe_enternet100-300_9x, pppoe_fast_2k, pppoe_fast_9x, pppoe_normal_2k, pppoe_normal_9x, pppoe_router_2k, pppoe_router_9x, pppoe_router_9x1... ] those are all the .ccs files it has. since im on windows 98, do i open each .ccs file that ends with 9x one by one, and change the RWIN to 64240 and then click save to registry, and repeat this with the rest of the .ccs files, and then click "done" and reboot my computer?

hey man - i got DSL and i been trying all the tweaks and different rwin's for several months now. you may find someone who disaggrees with me, but i doubt it - lower rwin's seem to work better with DSL. i know they do with me and i've seen numerous other DSL users post the same thing. leave windows scaling turned off and set rwin to 64240. be sure to install the webpage tweak - it really helps with browsing. by all means - you need to experiment with all suggested settings to see what works best for you but i'll bet you that you'll end up back at 64240. it is my opinion that you want to use the LOWEST rwin possible without sacrificing speed. i can use a HUGE rwin and speed is about the same but my connection isn't as stable or dependable. if i use a lower rwin than 64240 - my speed starts to decrease. so, as i said, that's my magic number - good luck finding yours

Thanks -

.ccs files?
Ok, now that I know what numbers to try, which .ccs file do i load and type in the RWIN number for, or do I do it in all of them ?

here is a list of some RWIN's for PPPoE:
46464, 63888, 92928, 127776, 185856, 255552, 371712, 511104
there are a lot more then that but it should get your started.

tweaks?
This past week i been messing with cablenut, and all the .ccs files and changing the numbers in them, so i deleted all the tweaks i downloaded off this site, and uninstalled cablenut.. So i can start over, cuz before i mixed up all the numbers on the .ccs files on cablenut and all that. So what tweaks do I need, from what u saw on my tweak test?

use 9x ccs only
Nobody answer to his question so i do.
you are in W98 so you try 9x ccs only. Go to the readme file and read ! Choose the good one depend on the internet provider speed or your connection type but always in 9x ccs. I got the same speed with normal pppoe 9x and enternet 100-300 9x but i have to test some rwin too soon. Choose the good one, keep it and try others rwin with the adjuster. Dont foget register backup !

32767 = bad for me
NotFastEnough, I tried 32767 for RWIN, but it actually made me slower. Here's my test results with 32767.
TCP options string = 020405b401010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 32767
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 32767
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1310.68 kbps (163.835 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 524.272 kbps (65.534 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 34 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
whats a number i should try for RWIN? I called DSL, they said they "don't support these programs/websites for tweaking" but i should higher my RWIN for faster speed, raising it actually made it slower for me then.

If you are pppoe dsl your mtu is no good. Should be at 1492.
I have a p3-733, 128 ram and W98 (like you) and the better rwin i tested are 371712 (1859 KB/s) and 255552 (1278 KB/s). Dont forget to install the ms vtcp.386 fix available on SG main site.
Continue to test, cant be worse only better. Good luck.
