can a bad cdrom cause freezeups?
Sometimes, while I"m playing a movie(that I legally purchased); my computer will go nuts. freeze up... totally. Could this possibly be cause by a cdrom?

yes, it could. it wouldn't be my first guess, but it could be the culprit. if the CD-ROM has problems reading a disc past say... the 80min/700MB point of a disc, the software you are using to play the movie may freak out. then again, it could be a dirty/scratched disc, or a corrupt movie file (does it do this with all movie discs of the same kind? do the movies play fine on another system?).
is this a DVD or a CD-ROM? are you playing a VCD or a DVD? to be honest, it would all be total guesswork on my end, no matter what answers you give me. the bottom line, though, is "yes" (to asnwer your question).

I'll expand then.
There are ALL either divx or smr discs. It's gotten even wierder too. The memorex discs I bought last month(50 pack) only was giving me 50% sucessful burn rate. Nero was saying they were all okay, but only half would work. Finally, I went out and bought some imation. Out of the first ten i've burned, 8 completed and work fine. The other two, after I put them in the burner made some VERY wierd noises. So, i'd toss them and try another. It work burn and sound fine. But wait! It gets wierder still. I tried putting one of the older discs I had burned in, a memorex. It started out okay, but then my computer would freeze. Mouse, still moved; but I would ahve to power down manually. So, I tried it in my burner... and it was able to read it fine. Discs making wierd noises.... anyone have any experience with this?
Is my burner going, some bad discs, cdrom burning out, cdrom dirty, burner slightly dirty, very wierd noises... oh gosh.
thanks!

Try this, boot into safe mode. Go into device manager and blow away all cdrom devices. If theres more than the amount of cd devices in your pc these are called duplicate drivers. They could cause probs like your experincing. When you remove them next time you boot up into normal windows mode it will say finding new hardware and will reinstall the drivers needed by the drives.
You have to go in safe mode cause normal does not show all device listings. Check it out.
