Registry

Post by VIKTOR2020 »

About once a week my puter gives me this message, "Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry. Windows will now close and repair your registry."
Is this a perk of Win 98 (I never came across it with Win 95)? Or is there something seriously wrong?

have you applied the HDD cache patch from MS's site?
if not try that, it could be that your registry is getting corrupted as you shut down.

No, no recent software changes.
Yes, I've applied the MS patch for delaying shut down until the HD cache is done.
Thanks for responding.

did you upgrade from 95 to 98 or did you do a clean install of 98? just wondering. if you have things backed up, maybe consider doing a clean install of win98, if you didn't already.

hope you get it worked out, keep us posted. :)

It was a clean install of 98. I had 95 on my last computer.
I'll keep you posted.

I reinstalled in April. You may be right about needing to do it again.
Question: When you reinstall Windows, do you then reinstall all your apps from CDs and reset all your preferences? The hours that would take kept me from doing it on my old Win 95 computer.
How do you do it?

Nope, when you reinstall Windows, it just overwrites your existing copy. You shouldn't lose any of your own non-Windows files.

You probably will have to re-select your Window's preferences though.

No overclocking.
Could be the RAM
I've run three RAM testing programs on it several times over without reported errors. Can RAM degrade with time?

depends on the chips.

as for that error, how often does it come up? like how many boots and do you recall what you did the boot prior before that error came.

I used to get that error as well, but then i found this program on the MS website called RegClean, I tried finding a link for it but all were down at the moment, couldn't even get to the MS FTP site....

but if you look around right you will find it... ill try and upload it to some spare webspace of mine and link it.. If Needed, else someone here just might have it...
