Hard drives for backup use

I don't need anything huge. Actually 1tb is more than enough. I need to buy 3 of them for my backup rotation. 1 stays in the computer and I rotate the other 2 from an eSata external docking station. 1 stays offsite

I just saw that Newegg has some WD "Green" drives at a pretty nice price point. Any comments? I wouldn't mind buying more space if the price was right and the quality was adequate. I'm sort of a WD fan and would prefer to stick with them.

It's a matter of what "grade/quality" you want.
The green drives are lower to mid grade
The "Raptor", "black edition" and the "RE" series are their top grade 5 years enterprise drives.

Blues, Greens, and Reds...are 2 'n 3 year drives. For quite a while we saw huge failure rates with the Blues...but they've settled down. Haven't done a lot with Greens, those are the lower power drives, slower RPM, mean for DVR's 'n other devices that don't need high speed.

Love my Enterprise drives. They took a serious beating heat and runtime wise, still passing extended smart test's. Ill never go back!

Pretty much agree with 'Cat and pete.

Aggressive tuning/performance means (all other things being equal) shorter MTBF across equitable hardware.

Of course not all hardware is created equal, but as a rule of budgeted thumb...

The 4 eureka boxes i have, 500gig HD's in each...IDE...have started to malfunction plugged int an old sony trinotron that you have to hit to gett ridd of the BGR's. I think the "Harddrives"="topic of converstaion", are still good and working on the USB. If yor worried about over heating hd's?, pull out the other video card(never put in the 3rd) and go with the WD caviar green.

WD's on SATA are good....like beer.
