Cape Horn

I'd like to know how they filmed this....Cape Horn, the cape at the southern tip of the South American continent, the Terra del Fuego...

Every normal man must be tempted at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
I often wonder if the voices in my head ever get frustrated because I'm just too damn lazy to climb that clock tower.

pretty intense. One reason the Panama Canal was built, because Cape Horn is almost impossible for a ship to get around due to its notoriously rough seas. Like when ships made passage to SF in the 1800's.

Hi cvoixjames

I've read many a story about the rounding of the cape over the years but nothing conveyed the danger like this little flick...WoW!!!

Thanks

The cape can get crazy down there. Notice most of the vishing boats in that video...stubby hulls with a deep draft...they're designed for those waters.

Just picture the horror of navigating around that peninsula back in the days of wooden sailing ships not much more than a 100 years ago. Sails ripping, lines and yard arms and masts snapping, hulls flexing and worse! It was a brutal half-way point for many people....and worse...a brutal ending for quite a few too!

As you say Brian the books telling of stories about rounding the Cape and the movies simply did not convey the terror of so doing as did this clip.

I am amazed the lighthouse has stood all these years and how in hell did they ever build the sucker in the first pleace?

Scary stuff indeed.

Have a great dya

I went through some weather like that back in the Coast Guard in the 80's. We were escorting a ship that was down to one engine in a hurricane. The seas were 35 feet average. We were heading right into the "bow breakers" I was on lookout on the 05 level "flying bridge" and the breakers were soaking me. This was my ship.

Those are intense seas Larry. For sure.

I've been in some heavy weather on a couple of occassions Lefty but nothing like you describe & certainly nothing like in this clip.

Thats a big ship you where on Lefty, but i'm sure you wondered whether it was enough at that time. Wow it must have caused you to put on a fresh change of undies after. :rotfl:

Hope you were getting time & one half on that outing Lefty. :thumb:

The water circles around Antarctica unimpeded, couple that with the mountainous type terrain of the ocean floor and you have the routinely nastiest seas on Earth! Great shots!
