Why is my IP address different from the one set in modem

Post by frontier2002 »

Can anyone explain why the IP address found in my network details is different from the one when i search it using http://www.whatismyip.com?

For example
Network connection details show: 192.168.XX.XX but when using http://www.whatismyip.com is shows 115.133.xx.xx

Can anyone explain which one is which and what is the correct IP address of my PC?

Your "modem" is actually a combo modem/router (gateway) protecting your home computer with a basic hardware firewall, "NAT". This is a good thing.
Common internal IP ranges of home broadband routers are 192.168.0.xxx and 192.168.1.xxx. It's a private Class C subnet mask.

That 115 address is your public IP address, the one that your ISP gives you...and the WAN interface of your router is obtaining it.
If you did not have a router..and you plugged your computer directly into your broadband modem, your computer would get that IP address. But you would not have the protection of your routers NAT firewall, and you wouldn't be able to have a network of computers sharing that IP.

Hi buddy,
The ip address that is shown in network details in the local or private ip address. The ip that is shown in online site is Public or external ip address.
I will explain it clearly.
There are two IP address:
1)Public or External IP address .
2)Private or Local Ip address .

Public IP address:
It is the one provided to you by your ISP.This is the address which will be visible in the internet. It can be found by visiting websites like IP-Details.com .

Private IP address:
Private IP addresses are typically used on local area networks like School,College, etc.,It can be found by Start->Run->Cmd->type "ipconfig" and enter.
