Setting up a Facebook account

Post by Easto »

My wife wants to join FB so she can interact with her family etc. I'm just a little leary about the whole thing but I think I'm going to have to give in and let her join. Are there any good tutorials and/or suggestions as to how to avoid all the pitfalls I hear about? In other words how do I keep her a secure as possible? She's not that computer savy and is the kind of person that will click on a link if she thinks it's something interesting (D'oh!).

Just don't let her click on much and DO NOT download anything from it...or else you will end up spending the next 5+hours cleaning a infection from your computer.

Facebook itself is safe, I'm pretty sure the information is still accurate that the Facebook site itself has not been compromised or known to spread any malware to end users PCs.

However, the "links" and "games" that some people place....some of the games have been known to spread malware. And if you see videos on peoples posts...that lead to other websites..and require special codecs or something to view..just any other unknown online videos...stay away. FB obviously cannot be responsible for links on their site to other sites.

A little utility made by the Untangle people..that helps secure your facebook account

Also have her Google "how to block Facebook games and apps"...and have her go in and do that on her account. That way you don't see all those games and apps muddying up your FB page, and you don't get nagged with those prompts from friends of yours that play it.

Keep Adobe flash and shockwave updated, as well as java, and your browser.

Once you get some of the basics like the above, FB is actually, IMO, very cool. I'm on it several times a day just catching up with people, seeing what friends from highschool and college are doing these days,

It's not scary or dangerous once you know how to avoid some of the surface noise of it.

Best thing to do once you register an account is to go into your account settings and set privacy to only show your information to your friends. I wouldn't let your information go out to friends of friends or anyone else.

Facebook itself is fairly secure.
However, recently they came under fire because some application developers were caught sharing/selling user info that their Facebook applications had harvested. FB then stiffened the apps development process and supposedly will impose penalties for violaters.

FB privacy is the main concern. It's real easy to set your privacy to how you want it, but FB changes their privacy polkicies and settings interface every couple months and so you have to keep editing the privacy settings. Mostly they add new features to FB and as they are released you need to set privacy for those new features.

Let's face it, FB is free, but why and how? Because they deliver ads to users based on the user info, settings, online habits, etc. FB is really just a method of precise target marketing platforms. The "Likes" feature is one way they do this. Every time you "like" a post by someone that "like" is stored in their database & related to you. Imagine how many times you "liked" something at FB. Now get the idea that all of that info can be used to determine what you actually do like and are inclined to buy.

I have set up two family computers for the kids and others to do their friendface twitting, online stuff. they're not the most up to date or super powerful. But what keeps everyone safe is they both run Linux Mint. It has every codec plays everything, easy peasy to set up and best of all I am not the least bit worried about getting infected by friendface germs.

look into it.

Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it.

I would be the one setting up the account for her and making all the privacy settings so these things are good to know.
