Not sure what this is yet.

Back: I assume the places and dates listed reference Union war camps with Confederate prisoners.

Any kind of family history behind this? Is it something that was handed down?

Not sure Indy. My grandfather passed away quite a while ago, leaving some things behind that had a traceable history (like the little stone bible) and some things that I can only guess at. Like this medal.

Given his military history I have little doubt about the Iron Cross but don't know if this one is a replica he picked up, if it's an original medal that he bought because he liked collecting medals (in which case I think he'd have lots and lots more) or if it was handed to him by his father.

People will forget what you said... and people will forget what you did... but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Here's a link to a thread I posted there: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ ... opic=57216

I appreciate the link Doc, someone ID'ed the piece within 5 minutes.

Of course, now that I've asked another question it's gone days without an answer :D but I'm glad they were able to point me in the right direction.
