A BB gun is a good starter... before you move up to a pellet gun.

Go for it. Get the training, permit and bust a few caps. :D

I have a permit, but refuse to keep a gun in the house. Or is it that my wife won't let me keep it in the house as long as my daughters live here? :rotfl:

Doesn't your sister have a kid? Think about this, what if the kid found the gun and hurt him/her self or others?

Something to think about......

We can play what if's all night, all day, all week long. What if your house was broken into, say a home invasion of sorts, and your child was kidnapped? It's too easy to play that game.

Brent, if you want to buy a gun, buy a damn gun. My suggestion, any flavor 12ga for home defense, 9mm Beretta for personal.

Whatever you get, know it like the back of your hand. Know how to shoot it...become an expert in it's use. Know everything about it. Know how to transport it legally, know how to clean it, know how to perform your immediate actions, know it's limitations, know the laws of your state, know EVERYTHING.

Don't be a punk and just buy a gun for the cool factor.

Get something that makes a nice BIG hole( 50 caliber sniper rifle comes to mind). If you want a real gun, your gonna spend around $500 or more for it. As Jawz pointed out, know everything about it and your states laws and don't buy just for the cool factor.

I’m going to get viciously honest here, I don’t think you have shown the level of maturity needed for gun ownership, at least not here on this board.

I am definitely glad that you are expressing your constitutional right to gun ownership given to us by our forefathers. As JawZ pointed out, know that gun and the law inside out, backwards and forward.

I rarely make mention of it either, but when I was 18 a friend of mine shot a guy I was holding during a drunken bar fight. That was about five years of court room drama. When you have a gun you need to think way differently, where you are going, who you are with, why are you carrying right now. The works man, you have to think far outside the box as they say. From past experience I know things can get ugly real quick.

You break into my house where my family lives and sleeps and you'd better believe I'd put a hole through your head.

There have been two instances of this happening within 50miles of me...both times the intruder was killed. One by pistol and another by shotgun...they played the 911 call on the news from one of them and the intruder was warned many many times while trying to break in..you could hear the wife screaming and the gun going off.

I would even consider trespassing on private property (clearly posted) a start to a bad situation if you don't take to the warnings on the signs.

Yep, some folks would be better off with a dog but dogs need to be cared for properly and that is a commitment that some folks can't make. So in lieu of a dog, folks will get a gun.

I completely agree with Jawz, if you want a gun buy a gun, just do as you have said and take the proper measures to know how to properly use it.

The thing to think about is.... if you are buying a gun for protection make sure you can actually use it on another human being... most people cannot. To take another life is a terrible thing even in self defense. And don't think you will just shoot someone in the leg or some other non lethal place. I know marksman that will tell you it is VERY hard to actually simply wound someone, you always shoot for body mass. In the event of protecting yourself your adrenaline is rushing and you are nervous and people are moving possibly fighting, getting off a "clean" shot is very difficult. This isn't to mention the fact they the gun may be taken from you in an altercation and then you are the victim.

Personally, I would look into pepper spray or some other non-lethal form of protection.

If you're trying to protect your home, pepper spray isn't practical unless it's mounted to a Desert Eagle. :D

When you bring a knife or a gun to a fight, better know how to use it. The bad guy will already have them, unless you know how to use them equal to/better than him...having a knife or a gun is actually an increased risk to yourself..cuz how the bad guy is kicked up a notch.

In a panic, whatever you do for defense should be instinct. If not..you're in worse trouble...you'll end up shooting yourself or worse...someone with you or some innocent bystander....instead of the bad guy..because you're in a panic and cannot think/act straight.

Also, keep in mind, when you miss, bullets tend to travel through walls and usually find relatives or neighbors. #4 buckshot from a 12ga helps to diminish that. That's why I prefer 12ga for home defense. Less bullet travel.

These debates always make me think of the woman who was kidnapped and thrown, purse and all, into the trunk of a car by a serial killer. He drove her out into the woods with the intention of raping, torturing, and killing her. (When the police looked up his record after the fact, he was implicated in other murders). She had a gun, legally. When he opened up the trunk, she was ready, and she shot him, and saved her own life.

There's lots of pros and cons about owning a gun. Liberal as I am, one exception is guns - I believe everyone has the right to own a gun for self defense. I find it incredibly important as one of our rights as Americans, as important as free speech.

That said, many of the things ppl have said here are true. You need to be prepared to use it. You need to know HOW to use it, so you're not fumbling with it when you need it most. You need to think of who comes into your house, where you'll keep it, will you lock it in a safe or not. And you need to think about your own temper. Most ppl would say "temper - come on.. of course I'm not going to shoot someone just cos I'm pissed at them, give me a break". But imagine your girl comes home and says she got in an accident with some guy who had a bad case of road rage, and he pushed her down before he drove off. Will you be able to control yourself, or will you grab your gun "just in case" or "just to scare him"? If you would take your gun in that situation, you shouldn't have one.

I dont think a gun should be brought out unless someone's life is at stake. I don't believe in shooting someone over property. A tv is not worth a human life.

However, if someone breaks into my home and incapacitates my boyfriend before he's able to do anything, and now he's coming at me to do god knows what, if I have my gun, I'm going to use it.

And there's my two cents on the whole gun thing :)
There is security in fearlessness.

I would buy one, get a glock.

9mm bullets are very very hard to find due to the new president, everyone is scared he will change the laws and put a large tax on weapons/ammo and ban a few models.

ugg... no kidding. I've managed to collect about 3000 rounds for mine so far to rotate old out and new in to keep it at that number. The holsters for them things are expensive too..I just purchased a new one for my 19 which cost me about 60$ plus a extra ammo clip holster.

I was born in Texas, my dad had a gun in the house growing up, kept it in his closet on the top shelf, was never loaded though, was never any ammunition in the house. I think my mom sold it, ugh.

One reason I also want one is because it is our rights as americans, and who knows what direction our government will take us in the future with this country. Just, incase.
