I love the fact he is coming back, but I think he is making the wrong choice in doing so. He's easily the best safety in CFB and this is a big stunner that he is coming back.
USC football: Taylor Mays makes it official — he’s back
Although he might have been the first safety selected in the 2009 NFL draft, USC All-American Taylor Mays announced that he will return for his senior season.
“There are a lot more things I want to accomplish as a player, a student and a person, things that I’ve dreamed about for a long time and that are big goals to me,” Mays said in a news release. “Returning to USC will help me be the best player I can be and put me in the best position possible for the next level.
“It came down to whether I felt I was ready physically and mentally. I feel there are some more things in my game that I can improve upon, things that would help me take the next step. I didn’t want to sell myself short.
“Plus, I want to be here for my teammates and provide an example to them as a leader and a player. I love the camaraderie here and the atmosphere. USC is a special place. From all the players I’ve talked to in the NFL, they say it’s a whole different world up there. They enjoyed college more than the NFL. I want to enjoy my last year of fun before it turns into a business.
“I’m also on track to graduate this fall and I know that’s a big deal to my parents.
“I’m excited to start working hard toward next season. In fact, I wish I could start playing the 2009 season right now.”
Said USC coach Pete Carroll: “We’re obviously delighted to learn of Taylor’s decision. He and his family did a lot of research and made an educated decision. He embodies all the virtues of staying. He wants to do this not only to improve as a player, but he’s coming back for his team, for his school and for the fans. We’re looking forward to Taylor having another outstanding season in 2009 and furthering his standing as a player and a person. He’s one of the most gifted safeties to ever play at USC, and he wants to come back and do it one more time.”
With Mays and tailback C.J. Gable returning, the biggest remaining mystery is quarterback Mark Sanchez, who has until Thursday to make his decision. Senior defensive back Josh Pinkard, who has sought a sixth year of eligibility, reportedly wants to return.

Yeah he sure is, but even if he goes USC has experience at that position. Still I would hate to see him go. I think he is waiting to see what Bradford does.

mustain should be able to take over nicely. why do think he is waiting on sam?

Stafford will be the first QB to go, but the rumor that I am hearing out of L.A. is Sanchez would be the 2nd QB to go if Bradford stayed in college. It seems MS is still leaning towards coming back, but he might think twice if he is told he would be the 2nd QB to go.

My guess is the suggestion is the 3rd QB would be in the 2nd round. There is a fairly big difference in pay between the 1st and 2nd. Or so I have heard.

He is talking about Michigan and next year I tend to agree with him. In 2 years though I would argue that point. As for USC against OSU next year I agree with you. USC should win in Columbus also.

No idea what person would say that. USC's offense will be absolutely loaded as pretty much everyone is coming back except one of their WR's. If Sanchez leaves they will still be loaded offensively. They take their biggest hit on defense, but USC is known for it's rotation and their secondary with Mays back will be very good and the rest of the defense will be filled in with players who rotated into games this year.
Naturally the defense won't be a team that keeps teams under 8 points a game, but then again that was just freakish. They should still keep teams to 15 and under a game.
Honestly, I can't imagine what person would think USC would struggle next year.

it was a "look at 09" type of story. i read it on one of the sports sites (cnn, msnbc. espn, etc...)
i guess we could talk about how THIS year tech got beat by how many UNRANKED teams?
aww so the same teams that ALL got bowl games..or the most in a single conference that had winning seasons? Dude Rankings are junk and will always be junk till at least the 6th week.

I wouldn't crow to much about the ACC Sava. Those 6 losses spoke more about their ability to beat up on each other then it did about success throughout college football. You guys had more teams in Bowl Games then the Pac-10 yet, the Pac-10 won more bowl games. Seeing as how the Pac-10 had half the number the ACC did that doesn't exactly speak well for the ACC. Honestly it had the feel of the Big 10 the last couple of years.

At least they all got to a bowl game and all had winning seasons up to that point..thats still pretty good. I'm happy.

take the rankings out then and look at the schools.
tao_jones wrote:As a Michigan fan I hoping for above .500 (even if it is only a game above) and a bowl game. We still need to find a defensive coordinator.
I am going to be interested to see who we get at Michigan. I would love to see an attacking defense in the style of an LSU, Florida or even Va. Tech.
USC quarterback Sanchez 'torn' on pending decision
USC quarterback Mark Sanchez has not announced a decision on his future, but several sources said Tuesday he has expressed a desire to skip his senior season and go pro as Thursday's deadline to declare for the NFL draft neared.
"I think he's really torn," safety Taylor Mays said of Sanchez. "He's gone back and forth. I told him regardless of what he does, he's a friend and I support him."
Sanchez is believed to be leaning toward going pro because Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford might return for his junior season.
"I told him you can't worry about stuff other people do," Mays said. "If he leaves, he leaves. If he stays, he stays. We go on and support him. But if Mark leaves, I'm playing quarterback and we can run the spread."
I think it's safe to say Sanchez is going out. As I understand it money is not an issue for his family and they are discouraging this move. I personally disagree with it also if for no other reason then he needs another year. Still the pot is not empty at USC thank God.
