Hand Gun selection

Post by Sava700 »

Ok guys I haven't been in the market for a hand gun in a while..but I'm curious from those of you that are active with them on your choice for what I'm looking for.

I've just gotten my concealed weapons permit today and I'm wanting some suggestions based on these needs:

Easy to carry ( suggestions on holsters)
Stopping power (wanna be able to kill a deer from at least 20yards)
Large capacity magazine (I wanna shot it many times again when its dead)
Light weight ( yeah not much else to say)

Price isn't too much of a factor..like I'm willing to go up to 1000$ maybe a little more but lets be reasonable.

My main purpose is for protection when I'm out and about..but otherwise I'm going to carry it with me in the woods when I'm hunting.

big stopping power/large capacity magazine is a bit tough when you also want high conceal ability and light weight. Maybe a smaller frame .40 or even .45 would be the ticket. You get down to 9mm and .380 and you are sacrificing some stopping power.

S&W make some great Law Enforcement "Backup/Concealment" models from 9mm to .40 these are 10+1 capacity which is great.

They make an even smaller model and you can get it in a .45, but sacrafice at 6+1 capacity. Kick butt little gun though.

Your talking $600 or so for these.

Define what you mean by "concealment" weapon...like a small backup unit? Ankle holster when in public? If so, it's tough to find a model with stopping power >9mm, and 14+1 or 15+1.

Although I've seen someone drop a deer dead with a .22 long....I think you'll want to stick to .45 to satisfy this category.

Going out in the woods....moisture 'n all, I'd probably lean towards a stainless one. When I was on the force here, since we're shoreline (salt water)...carried a S&W 5906 stainless.

I always liked the feel of Berettas too. For subcompacts..look at their Px4 Storm..they have a .40 model. There's a full sized Storm model too, up to .45.

I have a Springfield XD 9mm "sub compact" Holds 16 or 17 rounds has a 3" barrel.
Plenty of stopping power with the right round. ;)

That's what I carry every day.

I've been looking at a new 9mm... they are light weight and have some decent stopping power.

I've heard nothing but good things about H & K's, Brembo had one and I thought it was a great weapon. Plenty of safety features, rock solid reliability, a bit pricey though.

Concealed and "huntable" (I.E. minimum barrel length) don't play well together. I *think* in NC the minimum is 8", could be 6" but either way that isn't on my list of easily concealed.

I'd go for a .40 of some nature, decent velocity, decent energy and almost the same capacity os a 9mm (rounds) with close to .45 energy. Great round the .40.

I'm with Leatherneck on this one. S&W or Glock:

I went with the Glock model 19 9mm... it felt good from the first grab and seems to have good velocity and stopping power. Going with FMJ and also picked up the Tactical Laser/flashlight addition....total for everything was near 1000$

But man was that place I went to busy..everyone talking about getting guns as soon as they could before Obama gets in office.

Almost all police officers in this area carry the aforementioned gun... typically on an ankle holster.

It's the shooter, not the gun.

I always knew that I could make up for the inadequacies of the piece. I was "blessed" with this talent. Not proud of it. I'm not a revolver fan, that is the only real dependable weapon. If it doesn't blow up on you.

Is there a choice besides Glock. I don't know. I put my life on almost all the models.

I didn't like the grip of the Springfield and I believe the one that matched nearest to what I got didn't hold as many rounds.
