Vista PC Needs Tune Up Help!

Post by ScrewU223 »

Well I already downloaded AVAST anti virus and Smart Defrag and have scanned for and deleted malware and viruses and am now defraging my partitions. I would like to know what type of registry tweaks are good and what free programs if there are such programs help PC performance. I already have a good defrag utility and I like my virus software however my PC still runs kinda slow and it has a Intel Core 2 Quad and 6GB DDR2RAM. I used to go to tweak xp when I had my old comp but Vista is almost alien to me it is also the first 64-bit OS I have ever used. I am glad it is tho it lets me use all 6 gigs of ram. I also just downloaded HS WinPerfect SE if there is a better free program out there please tell me.

What I am really asking is how I can improve my preformance and how do I shut off startup programs that slow my OS boot? Also what background services can I turn off and how do I do that? I forgot. I got hurt bad in a moped accident and the head injury or my pain medicine affected my memory for some reason. I blame the Fentanyl.

With Vista...."Leave it alone!"

Seriously.

Built in defragger constantly defrags during idle time, no need for 3rd party.

No go whacking services...leave them alone.

Latest drivers, especially video.

Get all your Microsoft updates. Vista was sluggish when it first came out, SP1 brought a good amount of performance boost..and many other little updates since then have brought along little improvements. So summed up..once you get SP1 and all other updates in there....you see a substantial performance improvement.

Get a lighter antivirus package and she'll run snappy. (AntiVir)

I kill some unneeded Services, turn off system restore, turn off UAC junk, Don't allow any thing else to start up that I can start on demand.. check the msconfig

Avast is very light weight and good to use not to mention more user friendly than most others so stick with it.. here is a site to help check services off.

I have 25 Vista business machines and left them "as is" (did the updates of course) and they run fine.

Not after you compare them, AntiVir is much lighter. One of the several reasons I stopped using Avast for the freebie jobs I'd do, was complaints of how slow peoples systems were after installing it..especially the added bootup/login times.

Started uninstalling Avast, installing AntiVir...people say "much better"..this is across all sorts of various systems, old, new, good shape, sloppy shape, etc.

What's not user friendly? Clicking "yes, next, next" during install..let it update, sit back and enjoy, done. Right click drive to scan, doesn't get much easier. Exclusion interface is standard as they get.

never cared for antivir..and hear the same things the other way around from students whom I load Avast on their machines left and right. Hard to say its not the best when thats what I get told :)
