So my 200GB Seagate went up in flames - literally - yesterday. Nothing like seeing a flame shoot out the side of your computer. Hopefully I'll be able to fix it and get some of the data off.
I need a new set of drives (RAID 1). I store a lot of pictures, MP3s, and videos. I also stream a good bit to my Xbox and other PCs. I was looking at getting 2 WD 1TB drives. These: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136284 This is only to store data. I have 2 Raptors for the OS.
Any thoughts? I've always had good luck with WD in the past.
WD isn't a bad brand and they have excellent support in terms of warranty. I would go with them or Seagate (whatever you can get your hands on).

Too pricey for storage. I love my Raptors, but I can't justify that price for storing files.

That or the Hitachi 1TB drives, doable for a little over 100USD.

I'll check out that WD drive. 24x7 duty cycle is pretty much what this box does.
Seagate left a bad taste in my mouth. Kinda like Maxtor.
I doubt that it was a Seagate "ES2" that failed on you... That is an enterprise hdd. I would bet it was the model 7200.10 or the SV35.2. Those drives are cheaper for a reason...
Make sure it is the drive that I linked you to; Seagate ES2 or Western Digital RE2. It is not worth buying the cheaper models...

Yup...all the brands will sell several "grades" of hard drives. You'll usually find an entry level drive family with a 1 year warranty, low MTBF hour ratings...those are for the el cheapo models of computers. Such as Seagates old "U-Series", and WD "Protege" series. And a mid range family of drives, usually a 3 year warranty, MTBF up above 500,000 hours, and a higher "enterprise grade" of drives, 5 year warranty, over an MTBF rating higher than 1.2 million hours.
