Which system to build Athlon vs. Intel??

Post by Scum333 »

Well, I am still considering the parts for my new system. I am still using a 200MMX so I am pretty desperate. I am leaning toward the following as a most excellent bang for buck compostion:
Asus K7V
Athlon K7 700MHZ
256MB muskin pc133 ram
VideoCard---?? not sure. wait it out and just get a 3dfx voodoo3 3000 for now or get the geforce DDR. hmm?
Anybody have any thoughts or comments?

Hi Scum.
Just a thought..Athlon's can be picky about their memory. Muskin may be alright but I would spend a little more and go with Micron.
You can get it direct from www.crucial.com
Your right though, more bang for the buck, big time.

I am running an athlon 700. I recently upgraded to 256 of pc133 with infineon chips from www.memman.com

Brent told me that it is some of the best ram out there, as did some others.

John,

Is there any value to buying pc-150 memory?

I am not the expert on memory, but I do believe it will run at a lower ns and be faster... for a higher price however. Maybe Lordathens or some other memory guru can give you more detailed specs on the different ram modules.

For future upgradability get PC-133 RAM. Mushkin is pretty good in fact they even make 'Athlon' certified RAM. If your thinking about overclocking your athlon you won't need to worry too much about memory (i'm assuming your going to overclock via the gold fingers device) PC-150 is not really needed as PC-133 will prolly go to that level anyway specially if you get the RAM from a reputed mem manufacturer.

Unless your going to run your FSB at 150 I'd just stick with 133 or even PC100

Well,,,, Overclocking was the idea... Step thermodynamics guarantees there pc150 to that speed. I am guessing that the general opinion is not to o/c over 33%.

Bad news or rather I sorta expected this but it looks like motherboards based on the KX133 chipset are not going to work with the upcoming Thunerbird AMD Cpus. Sure hope you haven't bought yours yet. Apparently the KX133 T-Bird duo is too unstable. However news is people like me however using the older AMD Fester chipset based mobo's can however run the T-Bird. Looks like VIA screwed up yet again.

It doesn't matter anyway, you won't be able to get a Slot A Thunderbird... unless you buy one from like Gateway or Compaq, but I doubt they'll sell ya one.

I'm sorta convinced now that I should wait until Intel comes out with the Solano and AMD releases the Thunderbird. Very Frustrating. There is total shit product out there right now. No standards. No nothing. VIA is the KMART of the computer chipset industry. VIA memory bandwidth benchmarks suck lemons and they are to inflexible with their designs. Of course, I shouldn't really blame them. They never really intended to take over the chipset market. Just fill a niche. Now my bretheren. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for showing me that there is no decision to be made.
I give you many many Kudos. Some of you here even make my B list.

hate to tell you but amd screwed up on cache implementation -- athlon is better chip but cache makes it slower than pent3 at high speed due to 3/2 ratio vs pent 1/2.....actually amd chip IS faster but overall unit performance is just a notch slower. doesn't matter tho. not much to notice at 700mhz..

if your going to overclock the Athlon, you'd better get an Abit KA7 mobo PC133 or PC150 ram. that way you woun't need teh add-on card to redo the multiplier on teh Athlon.

I'm just gonna stay away from all that shit, I want Stability and Speed and Compatibility in a Computer.

That's why I'll stick with my Abit BE6-II mobo and stick a 1Ghz Coppermine on it Image

Actually since i won't be able to afford a 1Ghz cpu, I'll just get a Slot 1 600Mhz Cu-Mine and overclock it to around 850, that will be fine. Then I'll get some of that kick ass PC-133 Corsair w/infineon chips RAM. and either a GeForce2 or V5 6000 =)

I have actually heard that within the higher mhz cpus, the cumine is doing better than the athlon.

yes it is and i know why

it's all in the L2 cache baby

read this review of the new Thunderbird here on Anandtech, you will laern alot about the Athlon, Cumine and Thunderbid: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1252

Also check out thier overclocked BX reviews, they overclock the BX chipset mobos to 133 and show which one is the best, cause IMO the best combo right now is a BX133 with Cumine chip: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1250
