Printer sharing between XP and Vista, I'm stumped

Post by TEH WIN »

Proposal:
Would like to share a simple printer so a laptop can print over the network.

Equipment:
1. XP desktop machine with parallel port attached HP HSP 500 all in 1 printer/scanner/copier.
2. Vista HP Tablet Laptop with 2 gigs of ram (my idea on the RAM).

Scene:
The XP Desktop is hardwired to a linksys wireless router and the Laptop connects wirelessly. Both computers have no problem accessing the internet.
Both computers are on the same workgroup, double checked. Both computers have simple names ("bedroom" and "Michelle" respectively).

Problem:
The XP machine sees both computers on the network, "Michelle" and itself "bedroom". The Vista machine does not see the XP machine at all on the network, it only sees itself "Michelle". The firewall on the XP machine is off. the vista machine knows it's on a "private" network.

Tricky part:
The Vista machine CAN see the XP machine when i access it as \\192.168.1.100 but not when i try to access it as \\bedroom
so when i try to add the printer as \\192.168.1.100\printer it says "access is denied"

I'm stumped here. Both computers have admin accounts (only one account on each). The account names are different, but i thought xp and vista were smart enough to be able to get past that, maybe ask for a username and password or something.

What i don't understand is why the vista machine doesn't see the XP machine, but the XP machine sees the Vista machine with it's respective name.

If i left out any critical info let me know

Thanks for any help

Jason

Do you have network discovery turned on for the vista box?
She's presenting like a mandrill!
