defragging harddrive with vista?

Post by fastspaz »

Can someone tell me how in the heck I can defrag my harddrive on vista? I'm clueless. Thanks for the advice in advance.

hmm... well I just put "defrag" into the search bar, and it popped up a window in about 2 seconds that said my puter is being automatically defragged every wednesday at 1 am. It asked me if I'd like to defrag now, and I told it no, keep to your current schedule.

Hope this helps :)

I am using Windows Vista x64 and very happy with it.

BTW, for defraging I use Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier, I've used it for XP and now Vista, nice program.

Vista defrag is sooooo slow! The good news though is that MS is actively working on a new faster Vista defrag for SP1 when it comes out.

Vista's built in defrag is actually Diskkeeper lite... and does a surprisingly good job at that.

Just like prior versions of Windows.....one of the several methods to get to defragger...open up My Computer, right click the drive...properties, tools tab...you'll see it there, along with Checkdisk.

Another way...if you want to actually see % and stuff...since the new Vista Defrag GUI hides that info now, hit up the command prompt,
defrag C:" can toss in -a or -w if you want to see some more info. (just type defrag and you'll see the list of options.

By default Vista defrag will run once a week anyways....not really a need to manually run it now.

Me too, I use Diskeeper Pro, and it works very nicely. Automatic defragment is great - set it and forget it, and Diskeeper does the rest. I like that you can enable automatic defrag for the partitions that you want, and disable it for others.

Nope. The XP defragger was an older Diskeeper lite, but Vista's has nothing to do with Diskeeper AFAIK.
