installing an extender

I'm trying to install an Airplus G 2.4 GHz Range Extender.

I am a complete novice w/ wireless networking. I have tried following the set-up tutorial yet cannot get the provided IP address to bring up anything.

The router itself is Westell 327W--are these two devices compatible? Also, do I need to disable any firewall? Any other pointers?

After looking at DLink's site, I don't see where they mention it will work with anything except DLink. http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=357

Take a look at the Linksys WRE54G. http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellit ... torWrapper

This works with just about any wireless router.

802.11 is a world-wide industry statndard, therefore all wireless are compatible with all other wireless units - inluding the Westell...

Your problem is likely confilicts with Windows and the AirPlus. If you are still having a problem, contact me off-line & I can guide you thru the sometimes tedious process.

802.11 is a standard however not all routers support WDS (Wireless Distribution System). This is what repeaters/extenders use to relay the signals.

Also, keep in mind that using a repeater will cut your bandwidth in half (roughly) just by the nature of the way they work. Not a huge deal for most people.
