HELP! My DSL download speed 1/4 what it used to be!

Post by jmarshal25 »

I have DSL internet through Qwest. My typical download speed is 300kbps. Starting a few days ago I can no longer download at any speed faster than about 50kbps! How do I go about determining the cause of this? Do I have some sort of spyware/virus? I have had my download speed tested by online services like pcpitstop.com and they indicate my speed to be 300kbps+ but I don't experience that speed any more!!

Thank you

If the speed tests indicate the higher speed, seems you can still attain it... Maybe there is packet loss, or something else that makes it appear slower ? How did you determine that you can no longer download at that speed, what program and what server ?

Other than that, you might want to try the Analyzer test and post your results so we can look at your tweakable TCP/IP related settings.

I hope this helps some

i have the same stuff happening to me but i notice it with ares p2p program . ad will start and then it just slows down and stops . when i look at my little pc's by the time clock it shows them to flash . but regular internet browsing doesnt suffer . i even configured my router (wrt54g ) to port forward the program

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 128480
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits (scale factor of 2)
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 64240

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2) <-- current value
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 5139.2 kbps (642.4 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your TCP Window limits you to: 2055.68 kbps (256.96 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 53 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

Dark theme rocks.

If its just P2P stuff it maybe your ISP filtering it out.

P2P programs will overwhelm most routers...too many concurrent connections for older routers with their limited CPUs and RAM to handle.
