Ftp,cuteftp,servu ???
What would you consider to be a clean and reliable connection between my computer and my friends computer via the internet?
I've always had troubles in the past with some of these software programs because of drop out issues, router protocols and what not so we've been sending our data files using cdrw but now he's moved away so I need a great solution. Newbie here on this so thanks.

set up a VPN?
Do you guys have your own websites?
If you have your own domains you could put files up there and then grab them in ftp, or if ya trust each other enough give each other access to each's domains...
sorry that's prob not much help.
I place files in my domain in a folder I'm hiding from the search engines, then give the download location url...works good, no special apps needed, no giving out password...and download manager can be used (don't know if a DM will work for you, depends on what your host supports) ...if you have a host
hope that helps
I'm sure somebody smarter will come along...

What are you goals? To just share files?
Microsoft recently acquired this one...
https://www.foldershare.com/
It's free. For just transferring files?
Remote Desktop Connection is another good one...built into Windows XP Professional. Requires firewall configuration...

You want secure streaming or to download files to be streamed later? If the former, you'll need VPN.Think wrote:Just to share files and streams of video data for presentations.
anything is possible - nothing is free

Yup if you want to do live streaming video then you'll need a VPN. If you want to just download and swap files then go with Serv U and whatever FTP client you want to use.cyberskye wrote:You want secure streaming or to download files to be streamed later? If the former, you'll need VPN.
Large increases in cost with questionable increases in performance can be tolerated only in race horses and women.

Which OSes? Does each end point have static or dynamic ip's? OpenVPN is free and has both client and server pieces, but...Think wrote:Virtual Privat Network?
Any suggestions?
You may be better off getting a basic web hosting package and as that to share the files or set up streaming on the server.
http://www.powweb.com is a good one - $7.77/month with 12G storage and more bandwidth than you could handle.

I have a dynamic DSL connection. I'll look into powweb.cyberskye wrote:Which OSes? Does each end point have static or dynamic ip's? OpenVPN is free and has both client and server pieces, but...

I use Remote desktop Connection but didn't know it could be used for file sharing. How is that done?
