Cable modem disconnect!

Post by omega0 »

Please help people i dont know what to do. Tried everything else, i have 768/128 connection that gets droped every now and then for no reason. When i surf the net its ok but when i use pnp client or xbox 360 it gets disconnected. My modem is webstar and i dont have a router. The connection is ok for a while but then it drops and all i can do is unplug my modem and plug it back in, meaning shuting it down and turning it back on(unpluging the electric cable since it doesnt have on/off switch)Here is my tcp test, please tell if i have to do more tests for you to help me.

TCP properties for IP = xxx.xxx.xx ()
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; {599FADC7-943D-7454-8360-9461F938DBA0}; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
Notes: Read the Analyzer FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

TCP options string = 020405b4
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 17520
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 17520

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 700.8 kbps (87.6 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your TCP Window limits you to: 280.32 kbps (35.04 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 116 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = OFF
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

Diagnostics look OK.

Some questions.

Are you using USB or ethernet, or both to connect to the modem?

You said that the connection just drops. Does the #4 LED(cable) on the modem go out when this happens, or does the OS tell you that connection is offline?

Do you have a third party firewall installed. ZoneAlarm or Norton maybe? Try disabling.

Im using usb, dont have ethernet in pc. Xbox360 is connected directly to modem via ethernet. Only data signal on modem box stops working, cable, pc and power are still on. Dont think its because of usb because xbox360 doesnt use my pc at all, just modem.

I uninstallated all third party firewalls, just using xp firewall.

OK. How many IP addresses does your ISP allow? If the answer is one then you cannot use the modem's USB and ethernet ports at the same time.

Anyway I would like to see you connect both your PC and xbox to a router for better security.

try those two tips, may help you,

Goto the device manager - usb controllers - right klik to the one of your controllers - advance - uncheck " dont tell me about usb errors".
below to the usb root hub.... check that the power does not limit the 500ma when u plug the x-box or other device and also uncheck the " allow the pc to turn of this device to save power".

tell me about ;)

Dont tell me about usb errors is unchecked.
In usb hub,power-it says the hub is self-powered, total power available 500mA per port but in descripction it says 2 ports avaiable and power required 0mA.Allow the pc to turn of this device to save power is unchecked.

I found out something new, should have looked there sooner! In event viewer it says error, source-dhcp,in events descripction says: your computer has lost the lease to its ip adress xxx.xxx.xxx.x on the network card with network adress xxxxxxxxxx.
And in another error says: your computer was not able to renew its adress from the network(from the dhcp server) from the network card with network adress xxxxxxxxxx. The following error occurred. The semaphore timeout has expired. Your computer will continue to try to obtain an adress on its own from the network adress (dhcp) server.

hello,

check in event viewer if u have conflicts in adress (I/O) or IRQs, even the status near, says ok.If u have same IRQ with other device may be u have some power off problems some times. try to change irq if possible. If adress is confict may cause your winsock broken. That damage hurts.
check out everything u can and tell us about. its is intresting. ;)

Interesting to you but bad for me
I can see no conflicts in event viewer.
Anyway what are the latest usb drivers you have? Mine are-Usb controller 1/15/2003 and usb root 7/1/2001.
Tride to hook up my modem via ethernet but my comp doesnt recnogize it??? In device manager i have 1394 network adapter but cant see webstar modem.
When i hook up ethernet cable data and pc lights are not on.
Thanks for trying to help me :thumb:

I just lost connection and tried to renew it via cmd. Tiped config/release and then config/renew, after a minute i got massage: an error ocurred while renewing interface local area connection: unable to contact your dhcp server.Request has timed out. Why cant i get connection this way and i can get it when i unplug my modem and plug it back in?Power of,power on?Is my modem dead or are my isp blocking me?

a) u have to know that usb and ethernet are completly different protocols and the only way to connect its other is under SPG adapter ( pulse generator ), to set tha same black burst (synchonization pulse) for the two 2 devices. u hooked up them how?

b) your usb controller is non updated and some old x86 motherboards had some power off problems with your controller but i think, if u didnt damaged a kind of hardware that, reintalling and updating windows is the best decision, to see, if your hardware is working fine.

Good luck ;)
