I suppose you could be held in contempt of the court depending on what was said. So, I guess it is a yes/no/maybe answer that free speech is protected depending on the interpretation of contempt...

I think the answer to your question isn't so much can you say something to a judge but wether another judge would up hold the contempt of court charge. I also think it would depened on the type of case. Like is there a jury or is it traffic court? In a trial a judges job is much diffrent then in traffic court.

Though implied it is not free in the constitutional sense. If you threaten to do harm to the president of this country or make a statement that is used to cause a riot or incite a crowd you will face jail time.
