I need help .....

Post by sandralynn4 »

Hi ,

I'm having a problem with my computer when I start it up - not every time , but some of the time . I shut it down every night , because I've been having trouble with it overheating ( I THINK ) . So when I go to start it up , it will come on - power wise , but it will not start up . When the computer is off but my screen is on , I have 3 vertical colours going down my screen. This is normal for when my computer is off , BUT it's been doing this when I start it up. So it comes on, as in, the power comes on , but the screen still has those colours on it as though the computer is off . So what does that mean?? When it does this , I have to keep turning it off and turning it on again , BUT - I can't shut it down properly nor can I even manually shut it off. I have to actually unplug it from the wall . That is the only way it will go off. THEN when I go to re-start it , it will begin to come on for about 3 seconds, but then it will go off again. So I have to unplug it from the wall again - usually several times - and then it will eventually start up. Sometimes it's fine after that ( like right now ) and sometimes I get a bunch of bluescreen error messages. and have to start all over. I don't seem to have a boot virus, or any viruses at all . I have 4 programs to check for spyware/adware, and it finds none. I regularly clean up my computer and keep it in good shape. Could it be my motherboard, and if so , how do I know for sure? Could it be a bad power supply ? Any suggestions would be great. I am running Windows 98 SE . Thanks !

Sandra :)

It might be a loose video card.

With your computer OFF
Open up your computer, and check the card that your monitor is attached to. Take it out, and put it back in the slot nice and snug.

Also check your fans. One on the video card, and one on the CPU. Make sure they're working.

[edit]
Your vid card may not have a fan. That's probably an older machine if you're running 98SE. Video may be built into the motherboard instead of a plugin card.
Check for dust buildup on the heatsinks for the vid card and cpu too.

And yes, it is possibly the power supply.

Hi Norm ,

Thanks for your reply :) You're right - it is built in . Last night I was chatting with my friend on Yahoo , and my computer started making an awful screeching noise. It sounded like a smoke detector going off ! So anyway , my friend is a Nerds On Site guy and he said it's probably a fan. I bought a can of air and blew it out. The one fan on top ( power supply ? ) looked pretty dusty. So maybe that will help .

Thanks again :)
