Im trying but it seems i got hit with 2 fairly big work units right at the start. When i get to the new place it has central air and i can keep the computers on 24/7 with no worries, but right now it gets hot/cold randomly in my room as i have no direct AC access (has to be blown in from accross the house to my room via a series of fans.)

I just threw it on a dual proc server with 3 gigs of RAM but it only appears to be taking advantage of 1 proc. Just read that it will use two but I have to do some extra work to make it happen. Does anyone know if this program is more processor hungry or ram hungry?

More CPU hungry...it will use 100% of idle CPU time. Lately there have been some bigger jobs...I've seen some take up a few hundred megs of RAM.

You need a seperate folding directory for each cpu, such as f@h1 and f@h2, or whatever you wish to name them. Two wu's will not work out of just one directory on the dualies. Hope that helps :)

I couldn't find jack on this so I guess its just me. If I'm running F@H my BF2 will not launch. It will turn on and minimize. If I click on the task bar button it will pop up. Play .1sec of the intro, then minimize again. If I disable folding BF2 works fine and dandy.

Just got FAH running on a dual PC with both procs pegged at 100% :) .
The Folding Minx was right :thumb: , just create 2 directories. Also you have to run the console version and give separate machine ID's to each. Here are the official instrucs from the FAH site.

Does Folding@home run on dual processor machines? Yes, you can. Additional processors must run the console version (with the "-local" command-line argument if run on Windows). First, make additional directories for each processor and copy the FAH Console executable file into each. Then configure them with the -config switch, filling in settings for each. It is very important to make sure that under the "Advanced Settings" option each copy is given a unique machine ID (from 1 to 8). The first copy will default to a machine ID of 1, so additional copies should be given IDs of 2, 3, 4, etc. Each may then be run out of their installed directory, using the -local switch on windows.

I had the exact same problem Shaggy with BF42, BFV and BF2. I turned off F@H and it would work. I can't remember exactly what I did..but now I run F@H and play BF2 at the same time. I started eliminating background programs until I was in the clear If im not mistaken. I mean, it's not really a big deal...Just do like you mentioned...I just right clicked on the folding icon and selected "pause work" and when i was finished playing, ticked it back. But now I don't even have to do that.

Mark might remember that problem I had few months back? Can't remember exactly what I did though. :(

I just shut down Folding when I'm playing any Battlefield games. For 1...memory consumtion...although my rig has 1.5 gigs of RAM, current folding jobs are often several hundred megs in size. Since I run an HT processor, I run 2x folding jobs at the same time, so having over 500 megs or more doing Folding...doesn't leave much for the Battlefield game to run in...which are memory hungry themselves and love about a gig of free RAM to run well.

Battlefield will run error free with Folding running...just not as smoothly. When I'm done playing BF I simply start both Foldings up again.

those of you with HT do take this post into account..

Science VS Points.. what is greater

http://forum.folding-community.org/view ... hp?t=10427

I have a p4 3.06 with HT and Im running only one process. According to thier site, thier software is using 100% of your physical hardware and ignoring your virtual hardware (AKA that second FAKE processor that HT gives the look of)

His post isn't entirely true, or even mostly true for that matter. Base on his username having AMD in it...I bet he made this post out of jealousy for Intel owners...now that AMD has dual core units...I bet he's running two instances by now.

HT is done within the CPU, on the hardware level, it's a way of capturing CPU instruction/cycles which would normally go unused...and putting them to work. No it is not equal to two true dual processors...but it's not twice as long to complete jobs either.

My P4 rig downstairs runs dual instances, the kids equal speed P4 rig upstairs run a single instance...we both get work done about the same time...I take barely a longer time to complete, but I get two jobs done within that time. This guy you link talks about 70% longer...LOL...not quiet...it's a matter of a handful of hours based on what I see.

Sorry MissTynker, I certainly wasn't trying to take credit for something you'd posted. Hey I even have you a :thumb: in my post :) .

Anyhow thanks for the help and I was lucky to have my dual machine finish a cycle before it had to do it's real job, SQL, today. It's older and only has dual 1800's though. I'd love to see how quickly my dual Xeon 3.2 DC or Exchange server could fold, but I think I was pushing it using a production SQL server.

Take care and have a good weekend!
