My German Shepard went thru a window this morning

Post by brembo »

Yeah, the dolt decided to stick his paws thru the window in the kitchen door. Some people were on the driveway yelling at each other(gettin ready to cut hay in the field) and I guess the fact they were yelling was too much for his protective streak to bear. IMMEDIATE blood squirting ensued. Got him right below his dew-claw on his drivers side and chewed up his big pad on his passenger side. The dew-claw wound was easy to dress, just a moderatly tight dressing and it was good to go.

...now the pad and his foot. This one still has me worried. I cannot figure out how to compress the gash while making a dressing that he won't try to gnaw off. I got the bleeding stopped(for the most part, if he jumps it'll re-open for a few mins). Ended up just gauzeing the area as best possible loosely enough that he does not seem to wanna yank the dressing off. Man I wish you could explain things to dogs, would be so much easier.

Oh, the guys on the driveway saw and heard the glass break and a big German Shep raising hell at em....I don't think I'll EVER have to worry about burgulars after that story makes its rounds. Banjo was HOT about those people down on the drive...lol.

 I'd say take him to the vet. Im sure a few stitches are in order. They might have to put a cone around his head so he'll stay away from the bandages. (maybe)

If nothing else a cone would help. Worth a visit.

:( Poor puppy! They may very well wish to put Banjo on some preventative antibiotics as well...just to be safe. Your vet will have the cone that was mentioned..and they are relatively inexpensive...plus easier on your nerves!

I need no money, but thanks. Situation taken care of. He goes to vet later today. Gettin ready to burn my lunch hour to go get him and let him chill in my office till vet time.

I really appreciate the offer for help with the dog y'all, but I just cannot accept any money help. My sister knows how I get when it's my dogs health in question and she has made arrangements.

He likes the office, so it outta even out the day for him.

Yup, get the old lampshade around his neck, that'll keep him from gnawing on the dressing. Vets keep them in stock all the time, they're cheap.

Glass cut is probably nice 'n clean, just open it and take a peek to make sure no broken bits are in there before dressing it. If you have a crate to keep him in for a least a day, forces him to lay down and relax. Cuz a deep cut low on his leg will bleed a lot of he's up and active (gravity combined with blood pressure).

No puncture wounds, just a deep gash on the backside of his "main" pad on his drivers side front paw. Keflex and wound dressing should do it. He's limping a touch and it only bleeds if he gets real feisty and jumps around.

Kinda cool to have the pooch at the office for the day, he just trots around and barks at the door when people roll in. Chillin at the door to my office right now, keeping an eye on the rest of the office from there. Oh, and he howls at sirens, that flipped out a client when he started that.

Just a note from a lurker with GSDs.

I live in an older house with old windows. They can crack and break very easily. My kitchen windows are low and the dogs love to hang out in there and bark when someone pulls up.

I put up those screen guards they make for storm doors. They're about $20 at Home Depot and attach in minutes with 4 screws. I can still reach behind from the top and open the window, but it protects the glass from paws if they decide jump up on the sill for a better view.

I hope Banjo is ok.
I had a shepard that had to have her dew claw removed after cutting it nearly off while walking on ice covered snow.

On another note: Just last night I watched a show on dog cpr and first aid. Interesting show.
