Technicality
Sometimes the legal system is just ....odd.
Definition of technicality
In this case, I don't really think it is very odd. From what I gather the reason is that a trial can't really hold up when someone says that they are guilty and then changes their mind. Of course, I'm just a laymen, but I think that its great that the prosecution must refile and rerepresent their case. Better to get either a clear decision,(Guilty or not), or a plea, rather than a potential quagmire.
In other words, the judge just said: "Okay you guys are going to have to start over." She has not succesfully avoided prosecution due to a technicality, jeopardy is still attached
