USA Stingy? Yeah right...

Post by Dakota »

Okay naysayers, eat your freaking crow. The US have NEVER been "stingy" when it comes to helping in a world crisis. NEVER. We are always there with our checkbook wide open.

US Pledges $350 Million in Tsunami Aid-Official

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will provide $350 million in aid for victims of southern Asia's devastating tsunami, a government official said on Friday.

Details of the aid package were still being worked out and it was not clear whether the money was in addition to the $35 million already pledged, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

President Bush (news - web sites) had said on Wednesday that the initial U.S. pledge of $35 million was only the beginning.

A magnitude-9 earthquake a day after Christmas triggered a massive tsunami that killed more than 124,000 people in 13 countries. The death toll continued to rise as more bodies washed ashore and hundreds of thousands of people remained without food, clean water, clothing and shelter

Fantastic effort on the part of the US Dakota. An effort I am sure will continue, no matter where it's needed.
Aid is pouring in from many places and I really believe no country is being "stingy". The enormity of this catastrophe is beyond it. Linkage from Australia. Unfortunately politics are creeping into the relief effort as you will see in the linked report. Victims don't need this. A complete bi-partisan approach is the only way forward.

Croc: Be proud. Australia is always there when you need her. One of the few remaining countries that truly believes all people should be free.

Why all the animosity on SG whenever something like this crops up.
If you read reports from any country that is giving to the effort, their initial donations announced immediatly, are being increased as the situation is assessed.
All countries, states, provinces and corporations, individuals and Unions with a conscience will give of money, supplies, Disaster relief and reconstruction assistance, also in the equation is debt relief,
The world bank has contributed $250 mill initially
What everyone needs to see is the big picture, not who is the first to hit the home run.
Their is no "I" in team also applies in a disaster as this.
The population base guaranties that the US will be one if not the largest contributor, but don't think you are the only ones contributing.

The media are doing this in the reporting of what's coming from where and there's a huge amount of political mileage to be made from it. Just ask the spindoctors. IMO it's wrong but that's life. The decision to appropriate public funds come from politicians.
