Workgroup holds old comp name after change

Post by Steve-O »

Hello all,
I changed the computer names in two machines on a home network made up of four PCs. Both machines took the name change and applied it. The problem is that the old names still appear in the Workgroup under Entire Network, making it look like there are six PCs on the network. When you try to delete the old computer, it says it's not available on the network. It's not causing a big problem, but my wife just starting moving and sharing files on the network and it's all new to her. This new problem makes it very confusing as she is trying to learn. Any way I can get control of the Workgroup to delete these old computer names? BTW, one of the renamed machines is Win 98 and the other is Win XP. Thanks in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide...

It sounds like those other names are still cached on whatever computer you are browsing from. have you rebooted all the PC's recently?

Thanks Kold for a quick reply. Yes, all the machines that had name changes were rebooted. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance...

Try disabling netbios over tcp/ip for about 10 min then reinable it on all the systems. Have you set any of the systems to master browser or modified any hosts files?

Thanks to all who replied. An immediate reboot didn't affect any of the systems in the network, but a cold boot cleared up everything. Later...

Yup, nothing to worry about, just leftover "ghosts" in the network browser cache. Usually clear up after a while by themselves.
