So, is your copy of XP a valid one... that is.... you bought it and registered it?

Yeah, go buy a legit copy. You guys amaze me. You will spend hundreds of dollars on the lastest flippin video card but won't step up to the plate for a buck fifty for your OS. Hell if your poor then go find a college student and have him buy you a copy for a lot less. And if you just can't bring yourself to fork over the cash then use one of the free ones like Linux or Free BSD!

Which would still cost you an arm and a leg. :)

Let's not prejudge here. There may be a legit reason for the key not working.

The guy hasn't been in to reply yet.

You may be correct. He might actually have a legit copy, but if he does why doesn't he follow the instructions on the screen saying to call microsoft so they may correct his problem?

the college here, university of toledo, software is only 10 bucks, or it was last year when I got some Microsoft software. Heh, but the community college I goto, Owens, i think they charge full price for academic versions!

but Ajsie, just do a google search, i'm sure you can find what your looking for....but bewarned, as many of the sites include viruses with the downloads, or spyware, or just dont work.

I thought you were talking about Windows XP upgrade for 10.00 bucks. I think we get anywhere from 10 to a 20% discount. It saves a little, but it's still pretty expensive even at that.

There is a way to change your key. Follow these steps :

# Click Start, and then click Run.
# In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
# In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents
# In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.
# Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.
# Click Start, and then click Run.
# In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
# Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next.
# Click Change Product key.
# Type the new product key in the New key boxes, and then click Update.

If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later, and then restart the computer.
# Repeat steps 6 and 7 to verify that Windows is activated. You receive the following message:

Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.
# Click OK.
# Install SP1 for Windows XP.

If you cannot restart Windows after you install SP1, press F8 when you restart the computer, select Last Known Good Configuration, and then repeat this procedure.

Yes it's legal to change your product key, as long as you have a new 'licensed' one to change it to.
