Did you try manual ips on both machines if not http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=177
Comptia a+ n+
Right click "My Network Places"
Right click "Local Area Connection" (or whatever connection your isp is hooked to)
Click "Configure"
Click the "Power Managment" tab
Uncheck "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" if checked. If not disregard.
click ok till your out of all the windows.
Restart your computer. :2cool:

Tried that. No dice
BTW it just did it while I was using this computer, my mom was using the other one and it dropped the connections on both computers.
What ip addys are the computers using? Should be 192.168.x.x

Don't think its the firmware, I will check if I have the most recent. Don't think its the router either. I mean the connection never drops unless the one computer is used for a length of time. Leads me to believe it have something to do with me switching back to 2000 NT pro on that particular computer. Got to be a setting in 2000 I just feel in my gut that is the culprit.
Anyone who has a home network with 2000 Pro and XP home if you had any experiences with this your advice would be great.

Thats what I got here. I use a Linksys befsr41 router between the two.
Any firewalls running?

Not yet I was just about to. I think I have found the problem just not a solution. I watched my mom on the comp and she was using ebay everytime it was happening to her. She would click on an item and while it was loading it would time out on her. *I have RR 3mb down And drop the connection. I have to unplug the router and let it set for a sec then plug it back up to retrieve the connection. Can't even use ipconfig /release; renew doesn't work. Can't understand why it keeps timing out. Is there some setting in 2000 Pro/ or network adaptor that is causing this?
Thanks
Thanks

NO it's gotta be norton personal firewall and or router and or cable disable that
I think it's norton you have a router which is a hardware firewall you tenichally don't need norton why the router is the firewall.
If you know the cabling is good and router firmware is up to date. My guess would be norton blocking ping or is trying to filter out something that is causing the purchase to go south.

Then why is Norton not causing problems on the other machine? Settings are the same. This was a fresh install of 2000 pro about 3 days ago and installed norton with typical settings and made sure to allow the ip range. Don't know what else it could be. Is there anything in 2000 or a network setting that will drop a connection if idle to long or if it times out.
May have a router or modem locking up on you.
Its advisable to disable the firewalls to rule them out as the source.
Your router will block for you.

Id also look at assigning IP's to each machine as mccoffee suggested earlier.
win2k is very stable and not at all likely to be your problem. Also did your isp up the speeds recently?

Lets talk some more about your router.
Model number and version?
Firmware version?
hows it configured?
I might have a fix.

Try to clean the systems of all spyware and block it as well
Norton has caused many pormblems in the past with many users on here a couple of people told me that your promblem could be
norton is file locking the network drivers and needs to be uninstalled first don't belive me just remove it and take it from there.

Not only can Norton lock you down and give problems But Malware/spyware can make norton think its under attack the only way to fix this is by
Removing norton
cleaning all spyware with spybot s&d
Put real anti virri on like AVG to make sure your not infected as a precausion Norton has been attacked on a regular basis and disabled even when it looks ok
Set IP address to both machines once your connected and running right
Note to self get a differant firewall
Final note:
Big time corporate ware dont always work.. AND I might not get back to help
at least not tonight

Private IP's have always been assigned to both computers, and have been granted permission in Norton. Like I said I don't think it could be the router because the other computer is not experiencing this problem. I am going to disable Norton right now and try it. I will let you guys know if that is the fix.

Well its not the firewall. Turned it off, and worked for about 25 minutes then went to Page Can't Be Displayed. I am completely stumped on this one. Only happens when she goes to ebay, she browses on it for awhile then she clicks a link and it times out. And also knocks out the connection on the other computer. THen I have to unplug the router to get it up and running again. Can't figure it out. Both computers were working fine when I was running xp on both machines, then when I installed 2000 pro on the one it keeps timing out if a link doesn't load in a certain amount of time.

Couldn't stand it any longer did a complete reformat. Then loaded chipset drivers and video drivers. Now I will start doing windows updates one at a time to see if I can recreate the problem and with what update. If it doesn't I will install Norton and see if that is the culprit after all.
THanks guys.

Ok it stalled out on my other computer. Only happens when she is using ebay, its like it goes to load the pictures on the page and stalls out. Curious, my MTU=1500, would me having a small RWIN affect this? I will post the analyzer, I am using windows default RWIN.
TCP options string = 020405b401010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 115 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

What version is your Netgear RP614? 1 or 2? Here is a link to the latest Firmware
for version 2. Try that before you go on. Its beta but receiving good results.
Still running Norton stuff?

Yea but I shouldn't have to run beta software to keep a connection. Something is dropping the connection that wasn't dropping it before. My settings haven't changed except for changing the one computer back to Windows 2000 pro. And I do have ver. 2 and I have the latest firmware according to Netgear's website. It only happens on ebay, no other site drops the connection. Could that have anything to do with the RWIN being too low?
Your wrin should be fine. I don't run mine any higher. I have no problems on ebay. If you have checked everything out from the router to your firewall and nic. ETC.. . and everything is fine. The only site you are being looseing connection to is ebay. I would check with that site to make sure you are not banned from it. Just a thought. Not saying you did anything to be banned. But could be it was a error on their part.
:nod:Have A Nice Day!!!!!!!!!
Rwin to low? No! Ive run much lower and now keep em blank and let win2k handle it.
In the last few weeks some traffic has hit the net that is wreaking havic on some of the more popular routers out there http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/707/ci ... pnsm.shtml note from Cisco about it.
Could be causing issues with some software firewalls also, just a therory.
Now. Do you have Norton installed?

Yep I reinstalled 2kpro on the system and it still did it. Something is wrong, like I said its only with the one site, ebay. (You can actually browse the site for about 10-15 before it locks up) It will lock my connection up and I will have to unplug my router to get my connection back. No idea?
I am so confused.

I had a similar problem. I solved it by putting large ferrite devices on both ends of all ethernet cables. These ferrite devices are made to clamp around cables. They are avialable at any electronics store, radio shack, etc.

Imma take a stab at this one...
Plug your modem directly up to the computer having the problem. If it DOES NOT lock up that I would take a very hard and long look at the router. Maybe it needs a HARD RESET, not just an power cycle. I would also UPGRADE TO THE LASTEST FIRMWARE.
I willing to bet that you dont have any problems if you go directly through the modem.

You are correct, it is the router. When I plugged the modem directly to the pc never a problem. I have the latest firmware, but I never did try a hard reset. I am selling the whole computer, so it is not networked anymore. Just built another one, so one had to go. Waiting for potential buyers. LOL
