Death as entertainment.
Death as entertainment.
I am totally disgusted.
I do not care that the lives wasted were flies, ants and ladybirds.
This evening, the program has just finished, a cute concept was to take people from particular industries, and present them with a simple choice, you accept a challenge, or give up the chance of a 3 week holiday.
One of the guys was a zoo keeper from Randers Regnskov, (the site is available in English), it is a rain forest in greenhouses, not the biggest in the world, but a big attraction in Denmark. His "challenges" were to kill with a hammer, captive animals, albeit flies, ants, and ladybirds, in order to go through to win the chance of a 3 week holiday.
How on Earth a reputable company like DR, (Denmarks Radio - like the BBC in England), could stand behind such a thing amazes and disgusts me. It is not clear yet if the animals were genuine live animals, or simulated, but, I suggest, it is immaterial. How anyone can sanction winning a holiday by killing, or appearing to kill defenceless animals is unthinkable.
The program is called "Endelig Fredag", translates to "Finally Friday" or similar, and is presented by "Amin Jensen".
I would ask that anyone who even remotely is concerned about animal welfare write a mail to the following, write in English, that is not a problem. They'll know.

just preparing you for the real thing when they do it to humans...

Every normal man must be tempted at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
I often wonder if the voices in my head ever get frustrated because I'm just too damn lazy to climb that clock tower.

At least they bugs were eaten in Fear factory, survivor etc. This one in my opinion wouldn't be so bad if the bugs weren't wasted.

What is the difference?
from an ant to a mouse to a rabbit to a dog to lion??
I have no problem with any thing being killed, including humans, as long as the remains will be used properly and to the fullest.
Killing for sport is wrong IMO, but killing for food, protection, clothes and other necessities is not.

O.K. I'll kill the bugs, give them to you to eat so they aren't wasted and enjoy my 3 day weekend.
Never stepped on a cockroach huh? You haven't lived until you've stomped out a cockroach.

Back on the attack!

Whther I care or not about insects is not at issue. I will swat a mosquito if it is foolish enough to decide to bite me.
I guess you had to see the thing. An undecided man with a hammer being egged on by a braying studio audience to deliberately kill, for their viewing pleasure, a small animal trapped under a small glass/plastic cover.
No, I am not a member of PETA.

I don't have cockroaches thankfully, but I hear they are a bugger to kill ( no pun intended).
The only insects I kill in my house are things like ants nests because that falls under protection. The damage they can cause to the house will hurt the market value.
Any other stray bugs I find I just pick them up and throw them out the nearest window. Spiders I leave be cause I don't like them.

i kill spiders in my house because im scared of them-i have a phobia, if i let it just walk away i will not stop thinking about it and wont be able to sleep for fear its going to crawl on me. but moths, centipedes, beetles get scooped up on a paper and deposited outside.

Killing insects are a difficult subject for garnering sympathy, however I do very much see your point. Not only does it exemplify peoples' callousness, but it is quite possibly the stepping stone to the killing of higher forms for the sake of entertainment

I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. And all in all and on the whole: some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.
Spiders it depends on the type of spider and what it's doing. Redbacks (Latrodectus hasseltii), who do actually belong to the Black Widow family (Latrodectus), have a habit of taking up residence under our outdoor table and chairs. We tend to kill them, as having dinner guests killed wouldn't make us very popular.
Other spiders though are quite welcome in the garden or in the house, as long as they stay in their own little corner. Our bathroom has up to five daddy-longlegs living in it, they sit there quitely and catch bugs. The only time I'll kill them is if they come out of the corner.

wow those spider pictures are really cool
i dont like seeing them in my house but at the same time i have a perverse fascination with them..if there is a show about spiders on tv i watch it, and i've looked them up on the internet before, to see which ones live in my area and if any of them are poisonous (sf has hobo spiders btw, which are almost as poisonous as brown recluse's), and i just generally find them really interesting- as long as theyre not in my house!
fascinating pictures
