win xp help

Post by Mr_Patata »

hi i lost my windows xp cd... and i need to use chkdisk but the only way i knew how to use it was by going to repair console in winxp setup...
is there another option or way of using chkdisk... the dos that runs with winxp doesn't have any capabilities at all
thanx...
or can i possibly download the repair console and run it as a program in DOS or just download a winxp version of chkdisk
thanx

Open a Command Prompt and type chkdsk. It may prompt you to schedule a repair at the next reboot, at which time it will repair any disk errors.

I know it's not much help now, but when you get a hold of an XP cd you could install the recovery console as a boot option.
Once you do that you don't need the cd to run it, providing your PC can still boot up that far.
To install the Recovery Console as a startup option
With Windows running, insert the Setup CD into your CD-ROM drive.
CLick Start and select Run.
Type the following where D: is the CD-ROM drive letter:
D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
I don't know the same things you don't know.

One of the many ways to launch it from within Windows....right click your C drive in My Computer (or whatever drive you wish to check)...select properties, select tools, error checking section...check now button..fill in both checkboxes, reboot. Will run it on bootup.
