viewing raw pics

viewing raw pics

whenever i try to view my raw pics, it's a mess of black and white static. is there a specific way to open them in psp, fireworks, or photoshop? i'm using an hp photosmart 620.
DESKTOP: P4 1.8A, 512MB, 80GB WD-JB, 64MB GF2 MX, JLMS DVD-ROM, Samsung 48x24x48x, TV2000XP Deluxe, SB128, 2000 Pro

SERVER: P3 450, 384MB, 40GB & 7.2GB IDE (Promise Ultra66), 4.5GB SCSI (Diamond FirePort), ATI Rage IIC 8MB, SMC 1211TX, 2000 Server

Inspiron 8500: P4 2.2-M, 512MB, 40GB Hitachi, 64MB GF4 4200 Go, DVD/CD-RW, M-Audio Sonica Theatre, SXGA+ 15.4" TFT, 120GB WD-BB, Pioneer A05, XP Pro

i use a Prog called Irfanview to crop and resize all my pics...

It will open and save in raw format, but to open you need to type in its demensions when it asks otherwise it will garble it....

its worked for me so it might help yah out

The disadvantage is you can't open these image files with a normal photo package without using an "acquire module" (a plugin, typically TWAIN, which can open / process such images).

Also, if you have Photoshop, you can download a plugin that will allow you to open them there.

are there any cheaper (eg free) options? photoshop ought to have it built in, consdering its rank among imaging packages.
