super vibrating hard drive!

Post by kieofwoo »

A question for all the hardware gurus here:

I just got me another WD SE 80GB hard drive. I installed it next to my other WD SE drive. Now everything appeared to be ok until I noticed vibrations coming from my compter.

I traced them back to the new hard drive - it's really vibrating alot. So much that if my foot is against my case, it's very obvious. It sounds as if the drive head is constantly seeking.

I've download the diagnostic tools from the WD website and run both the short and extended tests, which the drive passes. But something must be wrong because my other WD doesn't make these vibrations.

Is there anything I can do before I rma it?

Cheers - Kie

If it vibrates real bad my wife will buy it off of you. jk

Just RMA it, so much easier than screwing around with it more than a little bit. WD is good about RMA's anyhow. I have 2 of the 80GB WD HD's and they run great. They're a little noisy but WD's tend to be.
