Reboot problem

Post by cplclegg »

Within the past few days whenever I restart my computer it hangs up and will not reset or power down. I then try to switch off the power supply for a few minutes and then power back up but it will not boot. I don't even get as far as the Voodoo BIOS loading. Now if I take the side out the case and use some compressed air to blow out the CPU it will boot up as normal. So my question is, what is the bad part of the system here? I have an AOPEN AK73 Pro with a Duron 800 CPU and an old Maxtor 40 gig drive. I am leaning towards the CPU because I think if the CPU is bad nothing would load at all, right? I have ordered an Athlon XP 1800+ and a new IBM 80 gig drive so hopefully the processor is it. Any other ideas as to what it could be and if it is the motherboard what is a solid board that will take both the Athlon XP 1800+ and SDRAM?

I think it's either a bios setting somwhere or the video card di you try a different card. Also are you getting any beep codes?? It could also be a cooling issue to.

No beeps when I boot. I did take out my Diamond MX400 since it wasn't any better than the AC 97 in Win2k. I was having a problem even having the card getting identified. After I removed it I have rebooted fine. Next upgrade will definately be a video card to replace my Voodoo 3.
