Post by morphe »

I have done a test on my pc.

Windows XP home edition
Cable modem NTL United Kingdom

Programmes I have downloaded DRTCP and TCPOPTIMISER.

I am trying to speed things up. I am downloading 2 kbps uploading 15 kbps on a torrent.

Sorry if it's too big, connection I put as normal as I didn't know what to put

The test shows you at 91%. Not bad.
People will forget what you said... and people will forget what you did... but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Try the following in cablenut which is below me.

DefaultReceiveWindow =76800
DefaultSendWindow =16384
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 200
InitialMediumBufferCount = 480
InitialSmallBufferCount = 640
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 15040
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 1280
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitOnReceives = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize =17520
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 3
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfOpenRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1460
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1460
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize =17520
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 92

Make SURE you follow these important tips as well:

1. Open Internet Explorer and select Tools - Internet Options - under the General tab in the Temporary Internet files section select the Settings button.

Select "Every visit to the page" and set the amount of disk space to use: to no more than 80MB. Now select the Connections tab and select LAN Settings make sure EVERYTHING there is unchecked and select OK.

2. For IE6 ONLY - select the Privacy tab and choose Advanced check the box "Override automatic cookie handling" and for First-party Cookies - Accept, Third-party Cookies - Block and check "Always allow session cookies. Now NO MORE SPYWARE COOKIES.

3. Another thing to do about once a week if you modem is on 24/7 is to power cycle your modem, just completely disconnect power from it for atleast 15 seconds and then power it back on.

4. Set your temporary internet files to 80mb and delete them regularly.

5. DSL users may want to check out the DSL Wiring Guide for possibly increasing your DSL speed.

6. By default Windows 2K & XP cache everything in the DNS cache service, both correct and faulty DNS lookups. To increase performance by eliminating the caching of faulty DNS lookups, change the following values from whatever their original values are to zero.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi
ces\Dnscache\Parameters]
"NegativeCacheTime"=dword:00000000
"NetFailureCacheTime"=dword:00000000
"NegativeSOACacheTime"=dword:00000000

7. Always connect your modem via ethernet (Network Interface Card) instead of USB, ethernet is faster and much more stable. Also ALWAYS make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer NOT Microsoft, alot of times the drivers from the manufacturer have advanced settings that help optimize the performance of your NIC that the native Microsoft drivers don't have.

8. Scan for spyware weekly with Ad Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download & SpyBot http://beam.to/spybotsd.

9. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

10. For 2K & XP - Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

For 98 & ME - Under your Configuration tab for your Network settings make sure you have only the needed protocols and install the vtcp 386 patch and the NDIS Update from here

I have done everything you said and saved to registry, I have also done all the other things apart from no #6 on your list.

Why do you say I haven't done it, unless I saved wrong or something, I just opened up cablenut and those values you told me where in the boxes, I double checked and they are def the same as you listed.

This is my upload/download speed at the moment, as you can see, my upload is far greater than my download, much rather it the other way round :)

you cant judge speed on things like KaZaA or BitTorrent, since they are dependent on the people you are connected to. Use something like a Speakeasy speed test or a large ftp download from a reliable server. You have to reboot after making changes with cablenut.

on that speed test I had

2003-09-22 15:42:09 EST: 556 / 110
Your download speed : 556243 bps, or 556 kbps.
A 67.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 110588 bps, or 110 kbps.

I saved these settings too the registry, I made a back up 1st, Mccoffee these are my settings. 5 hr time delay between here and the states :(

Those speeds are very good for your connection, 556 out of 600 and 110 out of 128, you're not gonna get much better.
