PC hardware trivia Q&A (perpetual thread, feel free to contribute)

Post by Faust »

really simple..... ask (or answer) a trivia question (doing either or both would be grand). remember, part of the fun here is not to ask a question so obscure that nobody will get it (i.e. how many molecules of silicon on the PCB of an Iwill BD100+?), but to ask a question that is reasonable.

my question:

what role does the SPD EEPROM play on a standard memory module?

Kind of like an identifier chip...so that the memory module is correctly identified by the motherboard at POST.

Question: AT motherboard had a larger keyboard port connector..what was it called?

ACPI..Advanced Configuration and Power Interface

Replaced two earlier technologies, APM, and PNPBios. APCI software (drivers) actually control power management and resources now.

Next question, twisting the above letters around, what is an APIC system?

This option shows the switching off mode for the screen:
- Blank Screen: the screen does not receive any display signal. Setting modifies for old monitors.
- V/H Synch+Blank: the screen receives the synchronism signal without signal of the colour. Some monitors work only with this setting.
- DPMS Support: the screen receives the signal for the best energy saving. Setting modifies only for the monitors which support the DPMS standard.

Started out for multi procs...but on most new single proc motherboards now. What's nice is having up to..64 I believe...IRQ's. Say goodbye to having 6 devices share IRQ 9, all those headaches.

Coms 1/3 = (I/O) 3F8-3FFh/3E8-3EFh = IRQ 4
Coms 2/4 = (I/O) 2F8-2FFH/2E8-2EFh = IRQ 3

Confession :
I had to cheat just a little to refresh the Com 2 and 4 I/O

:(

Nope, Pentium "Pro's". They didn't come in a 166 flavor. A 166 is either the classic P54 Pentium, or the mmx P55C. Those were socket 7.
