Tweaking 10 mbit/s connection...?

Well, kinda newb on the internet settings area.. I used the TCPOptimizer, and applied optimal settings for Extreme...

My ISP: Bredbandsbolaget (SWE) http://www.bredband.net

Speed: 10 mbit/s
Connection type: Optical Fibre/LAN
Firewall: Machine running Freesco + Kerio Personal Firewall

Are there any registry values that need further tweaking to optimize my connection?

Answers to Questions

1:TCP optimizer, not cablenut.
2: Windows XP pro SP1
3: TCP options string = 020405b40103030301010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 513920
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 20556.8 kbps (2569.6 KBytes/s) @ 200ms

Use the following settings in the TCPOptimizer:

Settings tab:

select - cable modem
check - custom settings
network adapter selection - your NIC
check modify all adapters
maxmtu - 1500
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 64240
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 3
TCP 1323 Options - uncheck both boxes

Other Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THE FOLLOWING

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot 1.2 & Ad Aware 6.0 to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster 2.5.3 to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES.

7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in my Help & Tips link.

Available bandwith (TCP/UDP)
Send: 52.8%
Receive: 29.9%

This is against a tptest server on my ISPs network.

Neither one of those is a very good test for your speed, try the ftp downloads in my help & tips link.

None of those mentioned above are good tests for my speed since I live in sweden :P

I'll try ftp speed against SUNET and post results later, just gotta try it at a non-peak time.

In the Optimizer...

1. I would leave "TCP1323 Options: Windows Scaling" checked. That allows for scaling of RWIN over 65535.

2. I would use the "extreme" settings, RWIN value of at least 513920

In order to benefit from the higher bandwidth available to you (especially apparent with higher latency/delay), use a large RWIN value (i.e. 513920).

nice problem hehehe
you can try also experimental test servers (see links below)
do several times each server
also diferent servers (directions & distance in ms)
- results compare from a server
- BUT also from diferent servers
- use apropriate tests: Ping & TraceRoute
IMVHO not easy to reach "the same" tests results

but for detailed inspection (examinations hehhee) I use:
coppy > Notepad > Excel (coppy to column)
than compare a few test result from severals servers.
unfortunately
often results are only analogical (rare similar than "the same")
so interpretation (explanation) were "not easy"
too sensitive for artefacts? - I have no opinion

Mno, you're giving him that RWIN for a 10Mbit connection? That seems WAY too small...

Actually I misread his post but for OOL users whos caps are the same 64240 or 128480 works very well. Since rereading it I would suggest what works best for most OOL users which is 128480. It all depends on his latency which is likely a bit higher since he is out of the country so even bumping it up to 256960 might also work well.
