Shared Folder Question.

Post by NelsonC »

My network works great I am using a dlink router, 4 port 2 PC's connected..

PC 1 (Conceicao)
PC 2 (Dolly)

Now .. problem is from Dolly I can connect to Conceicao "shared folder"

but from conceicao I cannot connect to dolly shared folder.
I checked the shared security setting .. and appears ok maybe I am looking at the wrong area can someone tell me what I should enable on Dolly so I can grant access to the folder.

thanks

Which OS are they? If it's any NT based OS, you must create a local user account on the computer doing the sharing...that the other computers log in using.

Meaning, take Conceicao, say you log in as "nelson" with a password of "craigt", and Conceicao has the folder you wish to share, such as "MyStuff". BTW, the username and passwords here do not actually have quotes. Now, on the computer Dolly, you log onto that computer using a username of "parton" with a password of "blimps". On Conceicao, you have to create a user account named parton, with a password of blimps.

Now on that folder "MyStuff", the security...add the local account "parton" to the sharing permissions.

Oops...forgot to tell you to disable Simple File Sharing.

Click Start, My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View tab, Uncheck the use simple file sharing option, Click Ok.

This is the way it was done with NT 4 and 2K, it's the way I prefer to do it in XP, I'm not fond of that simple file sharing and guest setup XP has by default.

ok I think I got it the computer Conceicao is my main computer..
Dolly is the one that hosts my webpage ect.. so I want to be able to share dolly with conceicao.. so from what I gather I create an account on dolly "it's done" and I have to tell it in the folder permission to allow access to conceicao?

Oh I undestand but I already have a local account I use on conceicao.. so do I have to create another

1 account on conceicao
1 account on dolly.

Does Simple file sharing not have to be active? why disable?

It has to be the SAME local account on each machine. If you are using John as your username on one, then John has to be a valid user on the other, too.

It's insecure, among other things.
