AnalogX Fast Cache DNS...pretty nice little app

Post by JawZ »

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/fc.htm

As long as there's an Internet, everyone is going to want to do things faster. Browse the web, ping servers, download files, whatever. Every time you go to a new website, or a website you haven't been to in a day or so, your computer needs to locate the server again using DNS. Each DNS request can take anywhere from 50 milliseconds, to even a second or more, but most are in the 100 to 200 millisecond range. Want to save a couple hundred milliseconds? Probably not, but what about a couple million or more? That's what AnalogX FastCache is all about.
AnalogX FastCache is a caching DNS server that runs on your local machine and handles any DNS request that your computer makes, from Internet Explorer to your favorite FTP client. Once a query is made, FastCache will override the normal timeout for the item with one that you specify, so instead of saving a query for a couple of seconds, it can save it for a couple of days. Now every time you ask for it again while it's in the cache, it gives it to you instantly.

Been using it for a few days now....no problems and I've noticed a bit of a performance boost.

Not trying to start a arguement, but I noticed absolutely no difference, if anything it was slower..That High Priority tweak works like a charm though.

What are your stats in the program?

So far today...I have saved 2 minutes 19 seconds due to caching.

Ahhhh??Don't know, how do I determine that??I just ran it for the day and noticed it seemed to slow browsing down..Not sure how to answer that one, if you look to the left, you'll notice I'm a Newbie.. :(

If you have it installed correctly you'll see a little icon in your system tray (next to your clock). If you right click on it, it will give you a menu. Navigate to the stats. It will tell you how much time you have saved.

If you have all 0's...then you didn't configure your DNS correctly. Did you read the included help file and then did you read the link that was given on the website at AnalogX?

Yeah, I use this. It does NOT speed up transfers, just speeds up DNS calls (just about every load of the page).

I don't htink it helps with XP.

BTW, if your on a network, you should only need to install this on one system, you can then point the others to the system it runs on (assuming its on all the time).

I run my own DNS server along with FC and together I get some good latency times of ~4ms avg, assuming the call is cached on either of my own servers.

for Windows 2k:
1. Open the "Control Panel"
2. Doubleclick on "Network and Dial-up Connections"
3. Rightclick on the connection and choose "Properties"
4. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and
click "Properties" on the General tab
5. Turn ON "Use the following DNS server addresses"
6. Set the preferred address to 127.0.0.1
7. Click ok - reboot - you're done!

Alright, when i get to step 6 and enter the address i get this error from my comp...
"IP address starting with 127 are not valid because they are reserved for loopback addresses. Please specify some other valid value between 1 and 223"

ok could some one hold my hand and walk me through this....what am i doing wrong here.

Thanks

UOD, if it puts icon next to clock, that means it's always running in the background and always uses RAM, so if you are like me and only have 32 MB of RAM, can I soar, lol :) :)

Lobo, it uses like .0000001 % of your available memory.

It's not the same as this app, it gets deleted when you reboot, this keeps a permanent host's file which is better. Also XP's DNS caching can cause some problems when it caches a bad number (there is a fix for that here at SG), where as this app you can have it verify all the DNS numbers in it's host file and weed out the bad ones.

Try this fix:

By default Windows 2K & XP cache everything in the DNS cache service, both correct and faulty DNS lookups. To increase performance by eliminating the caching of faulty DNS lookups, change the following values from whatever their original values are to zero.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi
ces\Dnscache\Parameters]
"NegativeCacheTime"=dword:00000000
"NetFailureCacheTime"=dword:00000000
"NegativeSOACacheTime"=dword:00000000

Are there any additional configuration settings for those people connecting via an ADSL modem/router. My router still seems to be detecting the ISP`s DNS addresses.
Do I need to point the router at 127.0.0.1?
Please advise.

Your router is likely using DHCP. You don't need to do anything to the router.

Install AnalogX FastCache.

Then set the DNS server for that machine ONLY to either 127.0.0.1 OR the IP Address of the computer on the LAN.

In Win2k you MUST use the actual NICs IP address as 2k doesn't like loopbacked DNS. IE, if your NIC is 192.168.0.13 on your local lan, set 192.168.0.13 for 2ks DNS. If you're using DHCP on your local lan, its probably best to switch to static. Its much easier to use and less heavy on the router, not to mention you know what is what when you packet sniff your lan for unathorized systems if its wireless based.

Next in Fast Cache config, set the two IPs to your ISPs DNS servers. Check your router or check this in your NIC status properties before changing everything. Or better yet, find a good fast public DNS cluster instead. Plug these into FastCache and ok it.

Fast Cache must always be running for DNS to query, and you cannot surf the net without quertying DNS addresses unless you type in IP addresses for everything :D

If you can use static IPs then switch of DHCP server in your router and then in TCP/IP settings disable auto IP config and auto DNS config and fill in values for both.

No two systems on the LAN should have the same IP and all should be set to use either the DNS server of your ISP or if you have your own DNS server use that.
