new dsl speed

Post by techman »

I just got SBC/yahoo(Pacbell.net) My download should be 768-1.5M. My speeds are 300/100which I think are terrible. I have applied some of the stuff like cablenut. I am running a wintel 516 through a linksys 4 port dsl router. I had a speedstream 5360 connected straight to the computer. I got around 400/126, but could not get it to work with the linsys router. Anyway, two questions.
(1) The phone company says leave the modem on for 10 days without pause for best results.... Has anyone seen this improve things? (2) Does being behind a router reduce your throughput that much?
Below are the specs.

BrowserTCP options string = 020405ac01010402

MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

MSS = 1452
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1452, which equals MSS.
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 63888
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2555.52 kbps (319.44 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1022.208 kbps (127.776 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 50 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Thanks for your time.

#1. I don't know of any reason why leaving it on for 10 days would help.... I do leave mine on all the time but actually any time I believe things are a little slow I actually power down my modem so it re-syncs.

#2. No the router shouldn't slow you down

Start with this TEST , to see if you are getting any packet loss.
P4 2.4ghz 512ram XP pro ATI 9600pro
P4 2.0ghz 256ram Win2000 Geforce2 MX 400
P4 1.6ghz 512ram XP Home Geforce4 Ti4200

They may have you capped at 384kbps down by default due to distance from CO or line quality. They are kown for their tendency to cap new users at their discretion and not alert them, regardless of package ordered. I'd contact them to verify this.

Hello fellow SBC/Yahoo member. I am currently going through the same thing you are. I purchased the extra bandwidth 768 to 1.5 downloads and 256 uploads. My bandwidth down, is anywhere from 264k to 486k but my uploads are always 245k. Sometimes I get 1.2m but the majority of the time its very low.

They mentioned the 10 day burn-in period to me as well. They said it was needed for the routers to sync me properly to their network. The 10 day burn-in did not help me.

Currently working with their third party techs by send them stats everytime my network goes below a certain amount. They said I needed to "build a case" because SBC doesn't react unless I have alot of proof. The tech and I feel its a congestion situation but I would need to provide alot of information in order to get it fixed. So it has started today.

Good luck, if your not happy with your downloads, keep calling their tech support. They actually keep track of every time you call.
