I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. And all in all and on the whole: some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.

Guys, look, it's not a normal radio....
check the website again...
Get Ready to Do a 180:
XM is About to Change How You Feel About Radio.
One big idea can change everything. And XM Satellite Radio is one big idea: Radio to the Power of X. America's most popular satellite radio service gives you the power to choose what you want to hear - wherever and whenever you want it. XM offers 70 music channels - more than any other satellite radio service. Plus 30 channels of news, talk, sports and entertainment. 100 basic channels in all, for a low $9.99 monthly subscription. And now, XM is the first satellite radio service to offer a premium channel for an additional monthly fee.
It's our passionate commitment to program quality that will give you more of the listening you enjoy most, including many commercial-free channels. XM's radios for the car and home offer you freedom - from static, from distortion, from that frustrating feeling when you drive out of range in the middle of an exclusive interview or a new song you've been waiting to hear.
So if you're a music devotee, a sports fanatic or a news hound, come share our passion for the new power of radio. Join us in a listening partnership as we capture the soundtrack of your imagination. Our job is to push radio beyond traditional limits and win you as a fan. Your job? To sit back, listen, and open yourself to the excitement of radio as you've never heard it before.
Once you hear XM, there's no tuning back.

It is like comparing a "rabbit ear" antenna to satellite tv. The sound quality and music selection with scant commercials makes it quite worthwhile. Give a look and listen before you judge. What is so bad about the NY/NJ area is the dearth of decent stations with anything resembling a healthy playlist. If you like and listen to music, it is worth the price.
I have a one and a half hour commute.

god saw that it was lacking and created the cd player... and after he created this he still found it lacking and added MP3 play capability to the cd player......
then he went online and used Kazaa to find the songs for his perfect playlist..

I was unaware that you had a magical cd player that automatically updates your disks with new material that can play for days on end, G-d has been good to you. Kidding aside. if you can tell me a good source for hearing a variety of new music, I am all ears. Radio in this area is horrible, the papers and magazines are poor sources. Before you can show interest and purchase a new CD (or download it) you should first be exposed to the music. XM is a great source for separating the wheat from the chaff.
It may also be connected to your home system or a portable.
I am not trying to sell the product. If you are disinterested, no problem. It was my intent on sharing what I felt was worthwhile.

I think it also depends on where you live..
in my area for example there are 3 decent radio stations...
all the rest are country (I don't like country) oh there's one classic rock station (I don't like that either)
I'd like to get one of those players myself..or better yet a new CD-Player with a Built in XM Radio Tuner but It's not really worth it for me..
I don't spend enough time in my car..

I see your point.. If I was still living in south florida I would like to have the jammin' Miami stations.. Central Florida radio stations suck.. Tampa has a few decent ones that are closer to south florida's style, but nothin' rocks the jams like old Power 96 used to growing up!

I can also vouch for XM as a very nice addition to your car/home listening pleasure.
The sound quality is very good. It's night and day over FM. It's GREAT on long trips. Maybe one commercial every 20 songs or so. You get your Top 20/40 stations with all the trendy songs but there are other great stations like the "decades" channels 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, Classic Rock is a good one too. All the Sports you can handle. Comedy, News...
It really is great. I have totally forgotten about local stations. I will tune to FM on occasion (usually to show others how good XM is in comparison).
If you haven't tested it yet, take the time to do so. I know that the whole idea of paying for music is one reason to bash XM, but they do provide a quality product and 10 bucks a month seems fair to me.
John, I also wish I had invested in XM. Man, could have made a fortune. They just went up to like 1.25 Million subscribers (up 250,000 over the holidays).
Now it's a race between them and Sirius to see who will get enough subscribers to secure their initial investment. Look for XM to get there first.
There is talk of only one of the companies being able to survive. Then again, look back at satttelite TV where everyone said the same thing but I don't see a monopoly in that market either.
Sirius offers less / no commercials but I have found that the amount of commercials on XM to be very minute.
On a side note, the box that David linked to is IMHO THE way to go. yeah it's a 129.00 radio, but it's modular.
The one drawback I have in my Pioneer for the car is that it's not portable. I can't take it in the house and have XM there.
Not sure the whole story behind the box but I can tell you that if you can move it from car to home and wherever, on one subscription, it's definitely the way to go and MUCH cheaper than buying a unit for the car, home stereo, and computer.
If you get it David, let us know how it works for you.
BTW, my XM unit for the car retails at about 150.00 with no antenna. The antenna I have runs about 70 bucks.
I got it all on Ebay for 99.00 so it you're in the market, don't buy at Bestbuy, etc. It's WAY too easy to install.
Peace,
FunK

I received the boom box as a holiday present. It works very well, though the antenna should be facing a window and the power output is moderate. I have been using in the office, it does impress.

Get sirius! http://www.sirius.com
It's around $12/month or $148/year. Lifetime membership is $400 and is a one time deal even if channels are added. Like I said before I don't know how Sirius could add more, they have everthing covered.
I have the mobile setup. I can bring it inside, on the boat or to another vehicle in seconds.
I'm a happy camper.
