Servers on cable without penalty?

Post by LLivingLarge »

I still don't understand how everyone else using p2p and IRC are serving files on cable connections (Including OOL users who have had servers running for months without a problem) without penalty. Is there something I'm missing here, like uncapping? Because it seems that I'm the only one has to suffer. I was fine for two weeks until my connection was downcapped by OOL.

Don't do the crime if you don't want to get caught. Doesn't matter what happens or doesn't happen to anyone else. Maybe they have only gone after the worst abusers...

Buy a business-class dsl line and you never have to worry again.

What Cable ISPs need to learn is that File Sharing is here to stay and won't die down.

You need to pay attention to the contractual agreements you make. You made an agreement. Focus on getting the connection you want rather than trying to break the TOS of what you've got now. You can't change them, but they can ban you. Dial up sucks. Cable architecture is not at all optimized for servers. Get DSL.

Beauty of capitalism - money talks. Write a letter to them telling them that's why your leaving. Since you've been punished for violating your TOS, they may not listen as well as they might.

cyberskye is right basically.

what kind of servers are you trying to run? if you want to run a web server or something just run it on a wacky port. chances are they will not find it.

Who said I was ever banned from OOL? They removed the reduced cap and now I am terrified to use Kazaa Lite. Besides, I'm only 15 and I don't have the ability to buy DSL as much as I want to do so.

In answer to the kind of server I want to run. It's an IRC Server using the SysReset Filesharing Script to host fansubbed anime that has not been licensed by any company in the US

(Distributing unlicensed anime is legal because it helps the anime industry until an American company licenses the anime to be dubbed.)

Also, is DCC on Port 59 a "wacky port that OOL will have trouble detecting"?

Then I guess I don't understand. Why are you scared to run even Kazaa?
