Hmmm, that sounds exactly like what the Klez virus does to Norton Anti Virus

Can't say for sure, but it isn't a normal thing to be happening.

Now that we know it's a security issue, I'm moving this over to the experts. :)

Were your AVG definitions up to date?

Just because it finds something that AVG doesn't find doesn't necessarily mean it's better. I don't think there is one anti virus program out there that catches everything. And you are dealing with a worm, and a trojan (or two) not a virus.
More your own fault than an anti virus apps.

In 23 years I've had ONE infection, and I got it from a CD I paid for. Knowing how to prevent infections will do you more good than any anti virus app.

Head on over to Symantecs site http://www.symantec.com and see if you can find a fix in their library.

What really sucks, is not having made any backups.

If I remember correctly, more than one instance of svchost.exe is normal. Depends what you're running.

While the above is an OK site in a pinch, it's only capable of running a scan on your system, to possibly find if you're infected. Once done, and you close the website, you are no longer protected. That is where having a good full time antivirus software becomes necessary, with real time file protection, running 24/7 on your system.
