Found this THING, what can I do with it?

Post by torsten »

It's a Compaq IA-2 "home internet appliance." Someone abandoned it in the basement of my bldg. Supposedly it can only be used to surf the net (only with MSN at that!), but I'm wondering if I can turn it into a useful monitor for use with a PC. The ports in the pic are all it has (2 are USB). Is it possible to do that or should I just throw it out?

You could probably keep the USB cable and use it for something...

Damn, I guess there's no free lunch. Or monitor.

I thought there'd be some ways to make it work. :D

Oh well. Thanks anyway.

I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. And all in all and on the whole: some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.

there may be a possibility that you mmight be able to use it as a second monitor, i have seen a few usb monitors that are used as a second monitor on servers and a workstations, that might be a handy thing to keep.
If it aint broke don't try to fix!!

It seems to physically work (at least the CRT part) but I don't have an MSN account to actually test it. Also this is for dialup only, not broadband. Are you anywhere near the U of MN? Otherwise, I don't think it'd be worth the hassle of shipping something of little value that's this heavy.

hmmm. don't even know what/where the lcd controller is, not to mention finding a pinout for it. :D

There's a Goodwill store near here. Maybe I should just leave it with them.

Put it on EBay. Someone just bought a iBook that does'nt work with a cracked screen and 500 MB HD for a hundred dollars. The building I work in was owned by sprint and alcatel before us. So far we're selling T1 equiptment and a telnet multiplyer. If not we'll have a few more chips for our collection. :D

You apparently have a lot more confidence in my abilities than I do :D

But it's an interesting concept to say the least.

Trouble is, mine's not a Webplayer. Everything's built into the CRT unit rather than a separate box with an LCD. Looks like it would be a PITA to deal with. I Might get the screwdriver out tomorrow..... might.....
